Default A/C Main Duct Door question (pics)

I am helping a friend with the a/c on his 81. He has the standard problem of air coming out at the passenger and drivers feet instead of the vents. During disassembly I found that the main door that switches the to the vents has a white plastic piece with a pin that isn't hooked to anything. I don't see anyhting to hook to it either. Could this be something that opens this door and needs to hooked up.

That white piece is hollow with a rod that connects to it on the other side. You can see the pin that hold the rod. They do not make reproductions of that part so do not loose it or break it.

I believe the the rod is part of a actuator that opens and closes the door.

Yes, I am going by memory but I believe that the rod is part of the actuator that open and closes the door when vacuum is applied.
