I'm not a big fan either, but looking under the hood, where would it go if not behind the seat?

I once worked on a Lamborghini with a friend and we couldn't even find the battery. It turned out to be behind an access panel in the rear wheel well, so our situation could be worse.

I kind of agree, but I was always wondering why they didn't put it behind the passenger seat for weight distrubution. 100% of the time there's a driver and less then 100% of the time there's a passenger and usually a woman who would usually weigh less than the driver. And if you're a nerd like me, never a passenger, unless you count my wife.

BUT with a low nose like the Corvette, and with the engine bay stuffed, there is not any other place to put it and still have it "easy" to get at. But it could have been behind the passenger seat and jack storage behind the driver. Still would have been a pain to get at. Only Duntov knows for sure and he won't be telling us.

What possible difference could it make 40 years after the fact?

No room in the engine bay and placing it where they did also helps with balance which is front to back not left to right. Keeping it inside also eliminates exposure to the engine heat which reduces battery life.

New Cadillac CTS's have them behind the right rear wheel in the trunk. Camaros, Ions, colbalts and a few others have them in the spare tire well in the trunk. Lots of full sized FWD GM cars have them under the rear seat. The SSR has it mounted in a box on the frame under the bed. GM puts them where ever they can.

My Cadillac DTS also had it under the back seat. Battery lasted a good 6 years.

It is really odd they did that since everything else on the car is so practical, comfortable, convenient, and easy to work on.

Yes, this is one thing that makes the Vettes unique. When I bought mine, the battery was a cheapie and was not even held down. The clamp was just laying in there.

Swapping for a bigger better battery was one of the first things I did on that car. I also cleaned the clamp and tied it down! When I redid the interior I also replaced the foam seal. Now it is perfect.

The weight was put in the center of the car for better weight balance. But, being 'inside' is an advantage and it allows the battery to live longer, I believe.

If you have a battery 'lift strap', getting it out is really no big deal. It's certainly a "cleaner" job than if it were under the hood.

The good thing about it is if you have a battery disconnect switch, anyone trying to steal your car who doesn't know old vettes is going to have a problem.

at least you can get to the battery behind the seat, on a 62 its out of sight and almost out of reach...you have to actually turn the battery vertical to remove and install.....I use a box end wrench on the battery post....try it sometime...my 68 behind the seat is like a cake walk compaired to the 62

Because 40 years after the fact, we are all still living with it daily?
(I agree it should have been on passenger side for the weight)

Ironcross, you didn't mention they were prone to blow up, lost several in my '59. No complaint on where the C3 is.
