Default Axle Code

Recently bought a 72' Cuope and the rear axle code does not seem
to be in the location everyone says it should be-- namely between
the spring retainer plate and strut plate. There is a space of ~1"
between these two plates but with rigorous brushing, there seems to
be no code there. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Rob

Hi Rob,
I believe you're looking in the right place.
Does the case seem like it's ultra rusty and pitted?
Good Luck.
Regards,
Alan

Something like this? This case, from a 71, was hardly rusted at all, but you can see the stamping is still pretty light.

Yes, that's exactly where I'm looking. Thank you for the heads up on the lightness of
the stamping. Guess I'll keep cleaning to reveal the code. Thanks again!!

You can also determine the ratio by turning a rear wheel one revolution and observing how many times the drive shaft turns. The code will only tell you what the factory put in, it wont tell you if a previous owner changed the ring and pinion.

Great idea! I'll use your method as soon as I can set it up.

Many thanks! Rob

Here's the one off my '71 350/270 4spd - LRW 213 E 2.

LR (3.36), Warren Axle Plant, Julian Date 213, Eaton Positraction, 2nd shift

Not as clean as Alan's, but nothing of mine is.

It looks like I have a bit of work ahead of me to remove the rust and scale I have to expose the code. Maybe I'll use some "Blaster" over night to eat the rust. May thanks for your help!

The differential is cast iron. I cannot believe cast iron rusts that mightily.

Default C3 Differential

Appreciate the observation and it would have been great if you were correct in my case. But, I've removed the layer of rust/scale/whatever from the area in question without revealing the code. There is some evidence of a stamping although I can only discern one or two characters. Apparently, the original stamping procedure was so lightly
performed, the code has all but disappeared. My best course now is to
use the method of spinning the wheel one revolution and observing the number of drive shaft turns. Thank you very much for answering my post.

If you just want the ratio, work on the end closest to the passenger side for the first 2 characters which will be Letters.

AA-3.55
AB-3.70
AC-4.11
AX-3.36
LR-3.36
AW-3.08 (unlikely, but possible).

I used Brake Cleaner on mine, since it's clear and evaporates quickly for less mess, and a tooth brush. Good luck.

Mark
