Default numbers real?

This motor has been rebuilt twice and clearly it's been decked. However if you look closely at the pad there are still broach lines visible. The block casting date is Dec 18 69. Build date is [corrected 16-Feb!] Feb-70. Any point in thinking this is a real deal? FYI, heads, intake, casting codes all match up.

I see typical swirl marks of a rotary surface grinder and a poor attempt at a restamp, but no signs of factory broach marks. Where do you see them?

No. The engine stamp says the engine was assembled the day after the car.

I see a bit of broach mark after the assembly code,
but I agree the swirl marks make it look like it was sanded with sandpaper. Poor restamp.

Sorry about saying the build date was 5-Feb. I was having a senior moment. The trim tag on the car is 16 Feb. The motor build date is 6 Feb as the stamp indicates.

Also, the photo didn't show up in the post as it looks on my camera. The lines between the build and serial stamps shows clear broach marks. The swirl marks are from the rebuild deck process.

If its been decked the original numbers would been gone.
I think it only takes 1 time.

It looks like someone used a palm sander to clean the gasket off the deck during a backyard rebuild. Can you guys who are saying it's a poorly done re-stamp point out some things that make you think that? 'cuz I don't see anything that doesn't look normal to my admitedly untrained eyes.

Keep the shiny side up!

If that's a re-stamp, it's a really good one. Looks legit to me.

Above the VIN number is a ledge, but that is the head gasket not metal so it could have been decked and restamped.
I don't like the looks of the "6" in the block ID stamp.
Sadly the only way to tell is take off a head and use a dial indicater to see how high the piston comes up to the top of the bore.

I'm leery of the engine assembly code. Spacing of the T with respect to the remainder and the varying height of the three machine code letters.

Hard to tell, but I'd bet odds are like 95-05 original - restamp.

The sander marks where someone cleaned the old gasket material and paint off are throwing most of you. The broach marks are still visible, although this shows how sanding can cause a problem. And to think we used to clean grease and dirt off pads 30 and 35 years ago with screwdrivers and pocket knives.

Spacing on the assembly stamp is fine. It is spaced on character centers and the centers all line up, not on spacing between character edges.

As such, the 3880 isn't matching the spacing on the 70S40. However, since the last set of numbers changed out frequently, the last being for every car, this really is more the norm than the abnormal.

I would say it hasn't been decked. If decked, it would have taken the numbers off.

The "6" looking like a small b is typical.
