Default Well here goes....Another '74 Rookie Frame On W/Pics

I bought this car year and a half ago. Guy I work with found it with intentions on a full restoration. He decided it was going to cut into his golf time so he decided to sell.

I have never attempted anything like this of this magnitude but my lust got the best of me. The price I felt was right....

Car had been under a pine tree in North MS for 20 years. 5 layers of paint was severely faded and the car obviously been leaking.

Interior was toast....Gas tank rotted with grass in it...Not original motor...

I'll let some pics do the talking for now....

More to come

Default Now onto gut

Check Out the Seat Belt Retractor under Seats....Titanic type stuff

My plan was to get the car in running condition as the motor does run and run quite well with all things considered. I did install new 650 Edelbrock, replaced intake and valve cover gaskets....

Installed brand new gas tank and fuel lines....New Master cylinder and brake lines....New rotors with 4 new calipers......

More to come...

Default Body Work, Paint Stripping

Used Chemical Stripper from Corvette Central....Not quite the whole gallon container for entire car.....Had to replace drivers door...It was beyond repair...All of the body seams were cracked.....Body showed no sign of damage...Just one small crack in front of pass. fender at the bumper....

New front bumper just checking alignment.....It was horrible on drivers side...

Still Stripping...

Filled in with glass the luggage rack holes....

Drivers side door....YIKES!!

I like 74s. Lots of one year only stuff and I love the "no bumps" front bumper and "split tail". It's coming along nicely!

I do love the irony of you using (what looks like) a golf club as a hood prop!

Wow.

Have you looked at the frame and bird cage? I think I'd be afraid to look.

Drivetrain, body, then interior. Maybe do the seats later?

Do a search on member "dembo" he's in Belgium and restored a '74. He's had quite a few posts on his project.

Well, when I saw the first pics of the car, I thought "OMG, does he know what he's in for?" But, after seeing some of the completed work, it's obvious that you really know what you are doing and you may just end up with a pretty nice car.

Now, have you really checked out the frame and birdcage for serious rust? It would be a real shame to fix the body/interior up on that car, only to find out that it is not structurally sound.

Yea, I should have posted this earlier. I have gone over the frame with chipping hammer, screwdriver and there is nothing but surface rust. I have looked up inside the windshield frame (inside kick panel) as far as I can with a light and mirror and see nothing that worries me. It looked to me as though the driver's door took the worst of the water damage.

I also should note that the car is pretty far along. I am just now getting pictures posted. So some of my projects I put up may not be in the actual order I done them in. What is left to be done to the car for now is get it in primer and the paint. Which I intend to do myself with the help of an experienced painter I work with....
