Default 47k miles or 147k miles?

I am looking at this vette and I am trying to determine if the mileage is correct. The seller says he has no documentation. It is over a hundred miles away so I am going off of pics at the moment. Just wanted to see if there was anything glaring that someone could point out to see if the mileage is correct. Waiting on a motor shot and will post it too as soon as I get it.

Pics are in my album http://forums.corvetteforum.com/album.php?albumid=22925

Let me know what you think. Thanks!

If most everything I see in the pictures is original, it could be just 47,000.

People that look at a lot of cars (and I am not one of them) usually get the best idea of whether an odometer reading of 47,000 is that or 147,000 (or 247,000) by looking at the amount of wear on the pedals.

Drivers side arm rest looks to have a lot of wear for 47K.

Yes the interior door panels is what is making me leery. Everything else looks pretty good. I guess I am going to have to just go look at it in person. Still waiting on the engine pics.

PRNDL is right about the pedals. Look for excessive wear or new covers.

I agree with the 147 or higher number, carpet wear behind seats, console wear, dual color interior, etc.

It's either a reasonably well cared for 147 or a tough life if 47 . . .my bet is that it's been around the block once and is more likely 147k.

My '71 is 6 years older with 55K....compared to this newer '77, I think it's 147K. That's a rough looking 47K.

Look at the wear on the steering wheel. My 92 has 135k on it and for the most part the leather is still black. But their is noticeable wear. As for pedal wear, its too easy to replace worn rubber to base a decision on. Seats, armrests, radio dials, parts you would normally grab and turn can all be indicators. Hard to go by cleanliness on alone on a 35 yr old car. Also when you talk to the seller you may be able to get a feel for his honesty and what history he may have. Receipts for past work, etc. Looks like a nice car.

from the pics.. not really able to tell.

the tell tale signs would be with a close inspection of the underside.. caked on grease, oil drippings from the rear end, tranny, oil pan, around the heads, leaking seals..

above, wear on the pedals, steering wheel, seat springs...

if the owner does not know or will not commit to 47K... assume 147K, before going to see it.

My 77 had 47k when I got it, and my carpet was trashed...But after everything I did to it, it didnt matter how many miles it had on it cause I replaced or rebuilt just about everything so milage wasnt an issue....

My '79 showed 60k when I bought it. It was from a boulevard dealer who said it had been stored for a time. These were red flags, of course, but although it showed some minor neglect, mostly loose stuff not attached, etc., the seats, steering wheel, panels, etc. showed no real appreciable wear. Some things you would want to clean, but not replace. I agree with the 147k opinions.

It's probably 147k. But to some extent it does and does not matter. If he has replaced or rebuilt a lot of the mechanical aspects of the car...it might run better than a 30+ yr old original car that has not had any restoration.

Ask for really detailed pics...ask what work has been done to the vehicle. If barely no work has been done...and he is still preaching 47k miles...and it doesn't seem to be in good condition...walk away.

If that's 47K they've been rough miles. 2 concerns: apparent rust on the brake pedal arm - indication of high humidity even on the inside of the car, and scratches on the lower part of the door opening - could indicate worn door hinges. You shouldn't get that in 47K miles.

If there is rust on the inside of the car I would be real concerned about the frame and the bird cage.

Not 47K. If it was original miles, the car would have been pampered it's whole life.

DS door panel is terrible, missing grab handle.
PS door panel missing grab handle and lock ****.
Carpet is dirty and worn
Chilton book in back - bad sign
Front bumperette looks like painted blue = cheap repaint
Door jam paint looks like has orange peel quality
map pocket spring is broken or missing
radio has been replaced

BTW, I'm not saying to not buy the car... just go through this stuff with the guy and get him to the right price!

The "bottom line" is that the seller says he doesn't know how many miles are on the car. Well, if there were any way he thought that it only had 47K he sure as he!! would know about it and be telling you that it was a 47K car!!

Since he isn't saying that....and the interior is worn much beyond what 50K miles would show....it has either 147K or 247K miles on it. I would believe the 147K mileage. Your offer should be adjusted accordingly.
