Default Block markings

Starting to reassemble my engine and while I was doing a final check, I noticed some numbers stamped onto the main webbing where the oil pan seals. Does anyone know what these represent? The numbers vary dorm 8 to 10. I don't think it is the cylinder number unless someone else cut the extra two off. Journals are std along with the crank.

Here is the link to more pics of the block:

Odd, my 69 427 has those too (it's an Oct 68 512 block)! I thought it had to do with an engine rebuilder stamping something there for reference. I had suspicions of bearing size or ?!?!?!?!!? Maybe not after seeing yours.........

Has your engine ever been rebuilt?

Default lower end block numbers/letters

I am rebuilding a mid to lare 70's 350 & it has "HCHH" on the pass. side & "HGGF" on the drivers side stamped front to back one letter per cylinder (this is an older crate engine). Surely they had some reference but I can't imagine they are of any importance to the engine rebuilder. This block was "heche de el mexico" or something like that-I think that means it wasn't made in the Estados Unidos-por favor? I'm not letting these letters keep me awake here tonight & I hope you don't eiyher. Seriously- this was the first time I have ever noticed numbers or letters stamped on this area of a block-good question.

It has been rebuilt at least once, there are conflicting punch marks near the caps trying to establish which is 1,2,3, or 4 and the rods were a hodge podge of numbers, so I am installing a set of pro comp "H" beams in there place. Hope to start clearance checks on bearings this week since I have a long weekend.
