Default heat from firewall

I just got a '79 (my first vette) and have noticed that after the car has been running for a little while, say 20 minutes or so, that I start to get a lot of heat from under the dash near the floorboard. It feels like a floor heater on full blast from a newer car. Is it normal to have so much heat coming thru the firewall?

It's not supposed to be like that but it is fairly common, if not "normal". Most likely cause is you have 1 or more grommets missing under the hood, but it could conceivably be an issue with your heater as well. The grommets are supposed to seal off wires or cables that go from the engine compartment into the car. Missing grommets allow hot engine air into the cockpit.

Does your car have factory air conditioning? If so, check the hot water shut off valve. If it sticks open, hot water runs through the heater core 24/7.

If your car has A/C the vacumn valve behind glove box could be bad giving you full heat all the time. I have seen this many times on these years.
