I have a 1980 Corvette and would like to replace the weather stripping. Has anyone done this and if so is it a difficult task? Also, any suggestions on where to buy high quality replacement weather stripping?

Can you live with what you have? Do you intend to paint the car? Replacing the weatherstripping is not an impossible task, but it can be piddly business. The best time to replace all the weatherstripping is following a repaint.

The factory used latex weatherstripping for sealing and wind noise reasons. If you purchase a weatherstrip kit, ensure it is latex rubber. The harder stuff will not give good results.

The weatherstrips are not that hard to install and there are instructions on my site on how to re-adjust the door glass and the roof panels if needed.

i was quoted at 8-16 hours by a one small worker.

It doesn't look difficult, but rather time consuming making sure everything is in correct place.

The way I work, it would take that long or longer, and probably a six pack, just to get the old stuff off.

hello everyone, i am going to need to replace the weather stripping on the doors of my 75 vette after i have it repainted. i am wondering, i have seen replacement kits on ebay for around 100-300 bucks but you can also buy a roll of generic weather stripping in a for between 20-50 bucks, will the generic stuff work?

It's often times hard enough to get reproduction parts to fit correctly. I can't imagine using generic stuff. Additionally, because of the price difference alone, I would question the durability of the stripping.

thanks for the insight, you're absolutely correct but sometimes things for corvettes are twice as expensive they would be otherwise, just because of the name. i was wondering if it was the case with the window stripping. there's no point in me trying to skimp a few bucks on something as important as weather stripping.

The weatherstripping on a vette isn't like putting weatherstripping on the trunk of a car. The ends have specific shapes and metal on the inside for mounting. Also if the ends aren't right they won't seal against the adjoining strip. I got mine from Willcox and it fit perfectly. Not a hard job but you have to work slowly and carefully.

I've been doing mine slowly for a month or so. Did the b pillars yesterday. Wilcox has good weather-stripping. Hardest part by far is getting the old stuff off. My tops are next and they are not being easy. Every screw on the window sides stripped and broke off. These tops might just be trash, but I'm going to try.
