Rear Speaker Enclosures / Setup Recomendations for my 79
I want to accomplish two things..........
1. Maintain the rear deck sufficient to store the T-tops
2. Install a system with good thump..
In a space as small as the interior of a 79 Vette.....I believe that you can accomplish good bass response in a small woofer.....if done with the proper enclosure.
Has anyone come across a prefab rear speaker enclosure that you would recommend?
i would get a good set of 6x9's (or 2-way component set) and a 8" sub (in a ported box built into one of the rear compartments) with a 3 channel amp....find an amp with a sub output and you should be fine..... somewhere around the 600watt range 3x200 or so will work
Try this....Boss Audio BASS1500 from onlinecarstereo.com. 170 bucks and quick to install. I got a set of kenwood 6x9s in the rear and a pair of 160 watt 4x6 speakers (20 bucks) in the dash and a pair of 160 4x6s in the kick panel. Cheap, and easy. I have an aftermarket stereo in my car. I bolted it up against the back wall in my 79. It won't knock the windows out of the car but it is very loud once I got it adjusted right. Real good bass also.
FWIW: the optional factory rear speaker set up runs a pair of 6x9s. AIM shows the installation and the parts (two brackets and two grilles).
Installation will not take away any space in the rear.
A small amp can be tucked in the space in front of the battery or the jack compartment.
I have same box as Rudolph. Its a great box for $99 shipped and I would have gone with the 10" woofer if I had realized I could have added the woofer 1" trim ring spacer increasing the sealed box air volume. With Infinity Kappa's & woofer and my alpine 5 channel amp (under front passenger seat) this is a nice setup and the bass surprising hit really hard & low. Had to turn down the power to the subwoofer actually to balance it all out. I had a Kenwood shallow mount 8" woofer & JBL's but that sounded like crap.
I'm redoing my interior right now incuding a speaker box. They're easy and way cheaper than 99 to build. After I get the Dynamat and Reflectix sound and heat dampening down this weekend, I'll do the box. I'll post pix as i go. You might want to consider pointing the Sub down (or back) for lows that sweep around you instead of change your heart beat. And if you go with seperates, put the tweeters up high for clarity in the highs. That C3 cockpit is pretty tiny. I'm not sure I'll even mess with the dash speakers. Looks like a PITA. Good luck.

Did mine for 30 bucks in a day, I ran a Punch 10", plenty of thump. I'm partial to Infinity for the 6x9's, and put a pair of 4x6 plate speakers in the dash. Sounds pretty good, and the front speakers are not hard to get to in the 78-82 dash. I'm short so I could mount the amps behind the seats, used a four channel for the dash and rear and a Fosgate for the sub. Oh, and the 30 bucks was for just the box, not the drivers, lol
Im running two 4x6s in the dash, 2 4x6s in the kick panels, and a custom box in the rear it mounts to the back wall with about 4-5" clearance underneath it for storage. I built the box 36" wide andi've forgotten depth and width out of 3/4" plywood. wrapped it in vinyl and dyed medium saddle. mounted two 6x9 pioneers with beige gaurds and a 400 watt amp in the middle of the two with a medium saddle front cover with the 75 emblem in the middle. if you email me at slvick@tva.gov ill send pics. I have two power acoutiks 10s in my daily Suv so when i get in my vette im normally looking for a break from bass and love the sheer loudness of pure music.
here is what i did i did not use a sub but a pair of kenwood 4 way 6X9s and kenwood dash speakers the location of the dash speakers is not ideal but it sounds amazing and best of all the t tops fit like they should.
i used cardboard to mock up the speaker boxes
i bought some nice leatherette that i dyed to match the oyster
i put some thin padding under the leatherette so they look nice

i did reinstall the speaker grills over these it fit fine.
I posted a thread on the box I built on here, but it looks to have been deleted??? Anyway here's another way of going about it.
We built a speaker box for probably $30 (press board, carpet, polyfill, adhesive, etc) way cheaper than buying on ebay. I think dimensions were 35x12x14. I'd probably go a little thinner if I did it again.
Built the amp, crossovers, and woofer on the back of the box.
Then put the tweeters and speakers on the front og the box.
It's nowhere as impressive as the unbelievable fiberglass system enclosure I've seen here, (under the title "custom fiberglass interior (many pics)" by member 2000frcz19),

This is the inside of the MDF box I built. You can see the 6" little sub on an angle mounted in the chamber next to the amp.
Here it is installed. Plenty of room for T-tops and other small bags. The box is easy to remove if needed. The sound is good enough for me, though I admit it is not a "high end" system. All with new deck, new dash speakers, new amp and sub, and the box materials I am in for less than $300.00. The 6x9s I had. I hope to upgrade them later.
