Need help deciding on a 71 454 purchase
I'm really on this fence about this. I've been looking for a decent C3 and this one is nice, but it's 22K which is more that I originally wanted to spend.
Particulars:
71 LS5 454 T-Top, 4 Spd, Power Steering, Power Brakes, and working AC. #s matching. About 100K miles. Correct paint and interior. It's had a frame off restoration done a while back and the frame and undercarriage look very good. No visible rust anywhere. Decent paint and interior. The motor is missing some factory pieces, I.E. distributor shield, manifold, and carb. It has headers. It has after markets wheels.
I guess I'm worried about the price. Seems like a sweet deal. And how these will hold their value (or not) over the coming years. Also, how quickly I could sell it if I had to. I've read that the 71's are not as desired as some early models.
Please help if you can.

Sounds like a nice car, and as long as it's well maintained should hold it's value or go up. If you needed to sell it quick, I don't think you would have a problem as long as you were aggressive with the price.
They call it 'asking price' for a reason. Assuming your original budget is relatively close, offer 1k below that, and come up to it if he counteroffers.

you won't find a cheaper one, 454 with air, 4 speed, solid metal? I would jump on that if I was looking. its a real good price if it is as you describe..

if the top looks as good as the bottom, buy it!

My two cents.
Based on the description you've given, it sounds like a very good price for the car.
One question you need to answer is, "Is it the car I want?" If you really want a roadster and this is a coupe, the best price in the world isnt going to fix that and ultimately you won't be satisified. If the car is what you've been looking for, I'd say go for it - with the caveat that it is a 40 year old car. You are going to have work to do on it regardless of how good a condition it is in.

It's actually more than what I wanted. I was originally set on finding a 70 Marlboro Maroon, but they're pretty uncommon. My only other requirements were being rust free, 4 Spd, PW, and PB. This one meets and exceeds those requirements. So, I'm happy with the find. And in fact, I'm getting pretty excited about getting a big block.
Thanks all. I think the deed is done.

I did not find this. '72s were noticably cheaper than '71s. '71s were minimally cheaper than '70s. My surmisal is that some people just can't get their head around the idea of the change from gross Hp rating to net.

It's nearly a done deal. So here's the top side. The Cragars will be swapped with stock rallys.
