Default Pics of the Diff rebuild

I stopped at COW and Chuck showed me the start of the Diff rebuild. The pics show setting the pinion gear depth and setup. Once this is set, the posi & ring gear will be installed. I love that special vise holding the Diff. It rotates. I'll post more progress pics the next time I stop by the shop.

A custom jig? I've heard of the pinion being aligned with the ring gear installed using a dye to track it's contact. Problem if you overshoot you'll have to start over, the crush sleeve compressed too far? This approach seems like it would be a bit more precise.

Keep the pictures coming. Interesting....

Default One other thing

One other thing I failed to mention. I have already told Glen that if I decide to sell this car I will give him a call and see if he is interested in buying it back.

That was Ace's Vette.
I'll keep adding to the thread until it's done and the new owner picks it up.

I hear ya about the wife. I just wonder why it never works that way for us!!

Hi Glenn,
It doesn't work that way because we got a better deal than they did when they agreed to marry us.
It's ALL making up for that fact!

Alan

Default Progress pics.....Swiss Cheese anyone????

Progress pics.....Swiss Cheese anyone????

Hey All... I spent the weekend "excavating" to see where we stood...

Building a nice, tight, reliable, and safe suspension is worthless without a good chassis to bolt it to.

If the chassis is "SWISS CHEESE" or the body isn't really attached to the chassis and is just sitting on it... All the good

work we're doing is gonna be a waste.

Here's what we found on the passenger side. I'd like to be moving faster on this part of the job,

but the place I ordered the chassis repair parts from just told me I've got to wait another week for the parts.

I'll keep you guys posted as things progress...

Here's some pics for now...

Anyone have some Crackers to go with my "swiss cheese"?

Did a mouse get in there? Wondering where the debris came from... It doesn't look that bad to me, I've seen MUCH worse. I'd imagine a small repair section would do it. I'm referring to the last picture. The first few... splice in a repair section?

Default Yes, a mouse....

Yup.. A mouse but YES it is worse than it looks....Sure there's metal there, but it's paper thin.

I've got pieces coming that should help get it back together...

Ouch - that looks bad. Fortunately my frame was solid. Not straight, but no rust

Good luck

Don't even go there! That's up to the new owner. As it is, we're splitting the cost of the extra work needed so he can drive it home to Atlanta.

Hi Glenn,
Well, those pictures are kinda startling!
It must be comforting knowing that someone capable is working on it.

I knew Chuck would need to cut away the bad metal. He's going to fabricate the inside plates and the outside wraparound caps, and lower frame corner patch are the parts he's waiting for. I think it always looks worse before it looks better and repaired.

I am very comfortable having Chuck doing this work. He is a pro. And, I happy doing business with Glen. I am convinced that I am going to be very satisfied with the result. I can't wait to fly up to New York and drive it back to Atlanta!

Default Update....

Ok fellas...Here's an update...

They told me I had to wait for the 3 frame repair parts...

SURPRISE! Two of the pieces came today.... EARLY. Unfortunately, they were not the side I really needed.....

Below is a pic of the driver side frame repair saddle.

So, we started work on the driver side today getting it ready....

Default More, More Progress pics.....

More, More Progress pics.....

Just wait till you see TOMORROW's Progress pics....

Things are happening very quickly.....

After you get the pinion height correct, you have to set the backlash perfectly.... .009 inches is right between .008 and .010...

Could not be better....

After the backlash is set (perfectly) then you run a pattern with gear marking compound...This is CRITICAL to making them right.

And there you have it.... A HEAVY DUTY 3.55 rear end with all NEW EVERYTHING...that's looks OH SOOO NICE...

I think I'll use this image for my next rear end rebuilding advertisement!

Just wait till the pics get posted tomorrow.....!
