I thought about looking for my 76 Stingray that I sold 20 years ago...found some old paperwork that had the VIN number..Carfax and AutoCheck and others want 17 numbers for a vin...are there any companies that have a database for older cars?
Thanks

Ben UK had created a post about 1976's birthdays. Many of us responded to it here on this forum. I know it's a small number in comparison to how many were actually made, but you never know.Maybe post the vin. #

You could join the NCRS and post a free Info Wanted ad in the Driveline. http://www.ncrs.org/
You could check with your DMV and run a title check beginning with the last place you knew it was titled. Could be helpful but, due to confidentiality laws, you could expect the DMV to be limited as to what they could tell you.

13 digit vin a lost cause to search
Okay if you purchase a classic car with 13 digit vin it is registered in the state with this vin. Why is there no central search for any vin number. This boggles my mind. I would pay to access a full 50 state search. I have been searching since 1968 for my stolen 67

Safety Car
privacy laws really won't allow you to find the car or the owner.. they are several scenarios where I would not want to hear from a current owner of a car I used to own.
of course there are many scenarios where I would not mind...
but as a result there are privacy laws..

That's why I am very fortunate that one of the PO's of my C3 did the search back to the original owner in the 80's before privacy became such a big deal and the DMV offices would still talk to you. It would be impossible today.
