Default Oh dear that does not sound good

can anyone shed some light on the sound in the video clip?

http://s990.photobucket.com/albums/a...t=MVI_0037.mp4

While tooling around checking my ignition timing with my new distributor I started hearing this terrifying sound. Anyone have any clue as to what it could be?

In order of likelihood:
Water pump, loose fan belt, alt bearing, a/c clutch.

Hammerhead may be right on the money. Also your timing sounds way too retarded. Good luck

Quick & dirty - answers lots of questions.
You could also use a 3' section of garden hose held to your ear.
Point the other end around the engine compartment until you locate the source of the noise.

Does the fan wobble when you grab it at opposite ends & pull back & forth? If so, replace the water pump, the bearings are shot.
Alternator usually has a high pitch whine when the bearings go.

Ditto Hammerhead: Use the stethoscope (garden hose) method. You will find your problem. Sounds like water pump / fan clutch problem to me.

Default Chasin' that noise

Another homemade tool that can be used to chase down a noise is just a piece of a broom stick. I've used it many times on cars and RVs.

Good luck

Does not sound internal. I'm thinking alternator bearing? maybe. Do the easy/cheap stuff first. Good luck.

I am no expert, and I did not stay at a holiday inn last night, but sounds like water pump going out to me. I went through that back in May of this year.

Harbor freight stethoscope for under ten bucks. Sears is cheap, too. helped me find a bad clutch throwout bearing on a mustang, everybody that listened to it thought it was a idler pulley. Just used the metal tip for the scope and slowly move it around. Louder-closer. Valves sound really cool, too! (okay-way too much free time on my hands..)

Noticed you have got new valve covers on, it would pay to check that there is no rubbing inside by a rocker happening, some of the clearances are tight. As some have said, use a short length of garden hose to listen for the source, move it around until it gets loudest.
