72 Black or Steel Cities Grey
72 Black or Steel Cities Grey,I am getting ready to paint my 72 convertable. I an thinking Black or Steel Cities Grey. It is not a numbers car, it will be a regular driver. It was orig Ontario orange but my 69 is Monza Red so I want something different. Anyone have pictures of Steel Cities Grey? Is the metalic in it very heavy, a little sparkle would be different, can't do that to black I guess.
thanks

If you want a 'stock' color, the Steel Cities Grey is your best choice for '72, IMO. While a black car that's clean and well polished is nice to look at, there are LOTS of 'em. SSG has a really classy look that is uncommon and draws lots of attention. That would be my suggestion.

Hi Cal Camara,
Hammadown here on the CF has a very nice SCG. Do a search and you'll find he has a lot of pictures of his car on this site.
I have a 70 convertible that I'm going to paint black when I start working on that car. Right now it's a light blue not sure the true color from when the PO painted it, but bought it with the intention to paint it black. My coupe in my avatar picture is a puke green now & I plan on painting back to the original color which is Laguna Grey.
SCG is a great color as is black. It would be hard for me to choose if I where in your shoes.
Like MN-Brent said, that cyber grey is a awesome color as well. If I were to get a 09 it would be my 2nd choice next to black.
Good luck on you choice.

In my mind, The best looking car in the world is a glass black chrome bumper convertible! period.
It may be more common than SSG, but no so common that you ever see two in the same day! (or in the same month!)

SCG is a very cool color. In Hammadown's pics you can see at least some of why. In some light it looks very silver, other times it looks very grey, and when sunlight hits it the right way, it can give off a very green hue that IMO is really cool.
All that said, if I was going to paint my '70 a color other than its original Bridgehampton Blue, it would be black.

If your taking votes, put me down for Steel Cities! I think it may be the prettiest color Chevrolet ever put on a Vette. The metallic is quite pronounced, as can be seen in the pics of Hammadown's beautiful car. I don't believe GM concidered it a Firemist color, but it was very close. It seems to me that the Firemist paints required a special paint gun to apply, because of the extreme coarseness of the paint, so the Firemist paints were usually reserved for Cadillacs (and Olds 98s & Buick Electra 225s built at the same plants), because they had the equipment to spray them.
I must be in the minority here, as I do not like black on a 68-72 car. Though I can't be alone in this way of thinking as very few 68-69s were originally built in black and Chevrolet didn't even offer it from 70-76, on the Vette. I love black on a solid axle or mid year, and since it was reintroduced in 77, it has remained one of the 3 best selling Corvette colors, but to my tastes, it never looked right on 68-72s. But that's just me I guess.

True, I wish they kept black in the lineup but SSG isn't just a standard gray. I like the green/gold tone that it has and looks spectacular in person. Cyber gray looks nice but it is too "gray"

To me steel cities grey is one of the sharpest colours ever for a Corvette. Black doesn't work on a Corvette for me because it seems to make the curves of the C3 indistinguishable which masks the best part of a C3. Having said that, there are some blacks with metallic sparkle in it. I had a 77 Lincoln Mark V that had black with a metallic sparkle in it, looked very sharp. I also recently saw a mid 80's Dodge Daytona with paint that looked black from 15 feet away, but close up it had multi-colour sparkles in it - that looked super good.

Hi,
If it were a coupe I'd say Steel Cities Gray, BUT, since it's a convertible, it has to be Black, Black, Black.
Regards,
Alan

SSG is an awesome color, IMHO it is one of the nicest ones I have ever seen! Black is nice too but you'll be wiping it down every ten minutes! Either way you can't go wrong with a new paint job! Good luck!
