Default insurance to cancel me if I add my vette?... has this happend to you?

So I buy a 80 vette. I am excited! I love this car. Time to add my vette to my insurance policy. I called my agent, told them the vin# and car... their response "You do know that this insurance company has a policy against corvettes? If we add this car they will cancel you"

What! Anti-vette? How un-American can you be?

I will wait another two weeks to find an insurance company. I will be 26 with 10 years of a clean record of driving. Maybe i can find one that will also have my motorcycle in the policy too. I am tried of having multiple insurance companies. Any suggestions?

So, have you heard of this before? Canceling your policy if you add a corvette to it?

I'm not sure if the 1980 is considered classic or how much you have into the Vette, but most insurance companies will only cover you for a depreciated value while collector insurance companies will cover for an agreed value( basically what you or an appraiser think it's worth ).

I have American Collector insurance and pay about 350 to drive 2500 miles a year. A lot of people on here use Hagerty both are good. Unfortunately, you might have to have different companies, it's worth the hassle to have the right coverage.

Classic/Antique is 25+yrs old... my beautiful will be 30 soon. My agent ran me through another company for antique but I am going to drive the car way more than 2500 miles a year so that is out of the question. They did ask me about what I thought i was worth and all that but no help. I was told one place will do it for ~$50 a month however I won't have comp and collision and is liability only.

I will check out the companies you mentioned Monday.

Edit...haha, Hagerty don't like me. They won't insure.. "•Any vehicles used for camping, off-road or utility-type driving, •Regular-use vehicles driven on a daily basis, •Motorcycles with performance modifications and •Dune Buggies" Of my vehicles/toys I have four strikes against me!

Try Hagerty, they provide classic car insurance. Your 1980 should be classified as a classic. You can go on line and converse with them or if you have an independent agent who represents them, they can contact and broker the coverage for you.

I have both of my vettes with State Farm. My 70 has a stated value that both parties have agreed to and is an antique/classic policy. With that the insurance is very reasonable.

Here in Canada, my 80 vette will be 30 yrs old this year. I can plate it as an antique. I will get stated Value insurance for it this year too. Currently i have restoration insurance on it. So we have some good options here.

As always, you don't want a stated value insurance policy. You want an agreed value policy.

This has been thoroughly beaten to death many times, check the archives.

I have American Family Insurance... in fact they are covering all 3 of my vettes and it's good coverage. Lots of good suggestions on the replies. keep in mind that some insurance companies do a credit check they you are looking for insurance. Every company that does the credit check puts a tick on your credit report.

You mentioned waiting until you are 26 years old.

Is this a problem with your age or your insurance company? There has been threads about an age problem for drivers.

I know with my policy I cannot let a driver take the car unless they have driven for at least 10 years, which usually makes the age 26.

Perhaps that is what the agent meant.

Good luck.

If you want to insure your car for its actual value, you will have to get insurance from a collector car underwriter. 'Standard' policy underwriters will not write "Agreed Value" policies. They will give you a lot of fancy talk, but the policy will still only insure the car for its "Black Book" value....average wholesale...which for a 1980 Corvette is probably around $6000. If you total your car (and any damage over $6000 will accomplish that), you get $6000 and a kiss from the insurance company. They get the car and can repair it and resell it for $12-15K or whatever.

Your problem is going to be your age and how you will be using the car. If it is to be used for everyday use, the collector car underwriters will not want to insure you. Call Hagerty, Grundy, and other well-known insurers and tell them the complete truth on your situation. They may be able to write a policy for you; if not, they will give you good advice on how to properly insure your car under your circumstances.

American Collector is who I have on my cars. My Dad is my insurance agent and underwrites for many companys and puts me with who he thinks is best. I have many policies with many companys but only one agent to call to handle everything. His office is right down the road and I dont have to press 1 for english when I call there with a issue.

IF you are in the NE region, you maybe find ERIE insurance is the best company to deal with....but they are a regional carrier, and I dunno what states they write in....
