Default Writing on the inside of the vette body

So while removing the old undercoating and road grime from the body of my 70, I found some writing in the gas tank area. "80" Sure it's from the factory.. assembly. Any idea, any guesses? Just curious and enjoying the lore of my car.

Default Job Numbers

That is the factory job number. Jobs were assigned a number from 1 to 500 and then repeated. Often, but not always you will find that the number is sync'd with your VIN. In your case, does you VIN end in either 080 or 580?

You may find other markings on the firewall or body behind the seats such as PB for power brakes or PW for power windows.

Default Lots of writing

On my 72 coupe I found "C60" and "C50" written in white paint under the rear rug. The rear crossmember had "AA 515" written in paint on it.
This was on a 1972 LT1 air-cond coupe. The AA was for the 3:55 rear end and "515" were the last 3 of the VIN.
Supposedly these were short cuts for the production people so they would know how to build the car. Example, the C60 meant they had to seal the vacuum operated vent door in the rea of the coupe. The other number (C50) was for the fan driven rear defroster.
There were several painted numbers in the car and on the panels.

Check the passenger's toe kick under the hood. You are likely to find the same number you found on the underbody or production line shorthand for the number. 27 on this toe kick:

The job number can also show up on the passenger's side of the tranny tunnel with the carpet removed. 394 on this one:

While you have it 'open', write "ZR1" somewhere....just so the next owner can tell all his friends.
