A few pictures will help. With the GB door open and the lock in the LOCKED position (you will have to manually push the latch to the closed position) you will see a slot in the front side of the lock housing (see pic 1). Use a small screw driver or awl and push on the tab that will be visible through the slot (no key installed at this time). Pull on the lock cylinder until it stops then re-insert the key and pull it the rest of the way out. If you look at the next 2 pics, you can see the locking tab (spring loaded lever) and the other levers that actually lock the lock. Hope this helps,
Gary
This picture is with the key inserted in the lock. With all the levers flush with the cylinder, the lock will turn. The one that is up is the one that holds the cylinder in the housing.
This pic is with the key removed. As you can see, the levers are prowd of the cylinder and engage a slot in the lock housing stopping it from turning. Most all key type locks work this way. Some use pins and others (like GM) use levers.

Here's a local article specifically for corvettes on '78-'82 glove box doors.
http://www.corvettefever.com/techart...box/index.html
The only thing the article doesn't explain is having to push the side pin in and unlatch from the locked position (latch will be faced outward) while going through all the tumblers until the lock drops out. Once you figure it out the sequence it goes pretty quick -
1) pull the grabbing latch outward with your finger which then puts it in the locked position
2) push in pin with small flat head screw driver
3) pull easily on lock and turn lock mechanism outside of glovebox door with your fingers to put back in unlocked position. Lock should move outward by 1 cylinder. Unlocked position is when the catch mechanism is moved inwards. You should also see the pin back into view hole again.
4) repeat process for all cylinders
I think there were 5 cylinders you have to go through while repeating the above process. It's actually pretty easy to remove once you get going.
While you have the locked removed be sure to lubricate the lock with Lock Ease. Give it a good wipe down afterward as to remove any excess lubricant that might run down the glove box door once the lock is back in place. If Lock Ease runs down the glove box door then it may stain the door vinyl since Lock Ease contains black graphite.
Good luck.

I got mine out in about 4 hours. What took the longest time was trying to figure out what to do once the pin was pushed it. It was like - ok I got the pin pushed in so now what am I suppose to do? I eventually hit some other Chevy forum online that explain the exact removal procedure. So, if I can remove a glove box lock then anyone can!

On my 1980 coupe I had a very loose glove box lock and wanted to tighten it up. I found this video on YouTube
This helped me get the lock out in about 5 minutes. It explains how to remove the tumbler and then you can remove/tighten the lock housing.
