Arizona Historic License Plate

Arizona Historic License Plate
Question....
We just registered our recently purchased '81 Corvette at the MVD. My wife wanted historic plates on the car, and I figured that would look pretty cool as well. Despite our car being a 1981, the plate we received reads "Arizona 77". The gentleman at the MVD kept insisting that the number following "Arizona" is not the year of the vehicle, but we remain skeptical.
Maybe some of you have experience with this. Shouldn't our license plate read "Arizona 81"?

I will do some local research and let you know what I find out, unless someone here knows??

They all say "77" at the top for Arizona.
1977 was the first year that Arizona started issuing historic plates.
Looks pretty good on my '76 though. The copper plate looks cool on a metallic brown car.
Drive all winter!!!

Helllo All!!!!
We went with the "Freedom" plates, the good old red, white, and blue. The copper plates are very nice though!
If you register your car as a collector car, with collector car insurance, then you don't need emissions testing. I don't believe the type of plate matters.

I just registered our '81 last Friday with no emissions as I carry Collectors Car insurance. I had been waiting for this change for 6 months as I wanted to, and did, put Hooker Header side exhaust on.
The insurance was very cheap too....cost me $161 for a year. Yes I have limitations on mileage (3000) and has to be stored in a locked garage, no drivers under 26, etc.....think it will workout okay. I have a regular license plate, nothing special. Just had to show the MVD clerk my insurance papers and no emissions.

This is what I was going to do this year, but didn't get it going in time. I will though by next emissions time!
I too will be doing the same Hooker side exhaust soon.
Cool!
Yeah, the kind of plates you have here don't mean nothing; you gotta have collector car insurance to be emissions exempt or live out of Maricopa County??

Wow! It is awesome how many Arizona C3 owners replied in such a short amount of time. I didn't even think there would be that many of you on this forum. Thanks, guys!
I'd love to meet other C3 owners in AZ. Any of you who are interested in monthly cruises throughout the state are welcome to PM me for meeting places and destinations. The group that I am a part of is made up of mostly 1984 to present Corvettes, so it would be great to get more of the classics involved.
Thanks again for your replies,

I plan to license my '69 Vette the same way when it's done.

Not related to the thread but to Arizona Corvette owners I guess.
Car show Oct. 9-12 it's called the 8th Annual Tombstone Run. I've never gone but it Says there will be over 200 vettes at the O.K. Corral, could be fun. Just letting you guys know.

Historic plates- http://www.azdot.gov/mvd/vehicle/mvdplate.asp#Historic
This past Feb 29th, I went to the MVD with proof of Collector Car insurance and my California title. I brought the car in the state with Historic plates for $48.00 total. You DO have to have a level one inspection IF you are bringing the car in from out of state. NO emissions test was required because of the collector car insurance coverage.....
Easy as pie!!!!
