Default Painting my crate engine.

My new 350/290 was just delivered. Now I need to paint it Chevy orange. Has anyone had any issues with painting over the factory black and then finding the black beginning to peel because the engine wasn't prep'd properly? I don't know if I should strip it to the bare metal first or paint over the factory black. Opinions????

wipe the factory paint down with some cleaner solvent to remove any oil, and paint right over it

I have the same engine (350/290hp) and painted it Chevy orange. After thoroughly cleaning and degreasing it, I sprayed DuraColor Engine Primer, let dry and then painted it orange. No probs!!

I sealed off all openings, washed it down with "Oil Eater" (available at Costco) and then wiped it down with Dupont Fast Dry Enamel Reducer 3812S, which dulled the GM black. I then sprayed it with Bill Hirsch Engine Enamel reduced with about 10% lacquer thinner using a Harbor Freight HVLP gravity feed gun (on sale for $9.99). The gun worked amazingly well with almost no over spray.
