Default Lots of Pics of the underside of my 70.

Had it inspected this morning and got lots of pics while up on the lift.
O/A frame is solid with surface rust. Suprisingly more in the front then rear. Front springs need to be replaced. P.O.S. exhaust will be replaced. Trailing arms are ok but will need bushings eventually replaced.
Any feedback & comments welcome.
Thanks, Glenn

The bottom of the quarters looks like bubba did some reshaping to fit around the mufflers. The inner edge should be straight, correct?

Glenn - thank you for posting the pixs. I have a '70 also and it's nice to compare things. I just wish I had a lift so I could really clean up and paint the underside.

Lift was at a local station. Wish I had a lift! I'd like to do that as well over the summer.

Overall it doesn't look bad. One of the #4 body mounts looked like it is almost rusted through on the bottom and I saw some rust scale inside the differential crossmember. Blow some air into the crossmember to see how much rust is inside. You probably have a long time until the crossmember becomes a problem but you should get an idea of how much rusting is going on by blowing it out.

Doesn't look bad at all for it's age but you need to track down the owner that thought cutting up the body was smarter than buying the right mufflers. That sucks!

Still a very nice Vette.

Thanks DZRick! Bubba is an A-hole for sure! Luckly you don't see it when the car's on the ground. When it comes time to repaint it I'll have them fixed.

GD70,
The bottom edge of the rear quarter panels did have a bit of an odd angle cut into them to clear the mufflers. Yours appear to have been 'massaged' a bit more than the factory intended.
Lots of interesting pictures, thanks for taking the time to post them.
Regards,
Alan

doesn't look to bad. Couple of quick observations. Your missing the lower radiator metal baffle.

Does your rear bang when you shift? Looks like your missing the thick rubber cushion on the rear ends front mount bracket. (the sideways photo ) It goes under that large shinny washer.

On the positive side your front crossmember doesn't appear to have a single dent in it. That's pretty rare.

Default Horseshoe exhaust bracket

that is mounted on the trans crossmember appears to be missing. That is where the exhaust pipes are normally clamped at that point.

Seems to have had a little frame repair on the drivers side at the rear dog leg? Welds don't match, vs. the right. that is one straight crossmember! Thanks for posting, great photo's! WB

Are you missing the bolts that mount the bottom of the two small vertical front bumperets to the front crossmember L brackets??? They must be vibrating loose at the bottom if this is true.

I also own a 70, I noted one additional concern. In the 5th picture, look at drivers front coil spring, is that a wedge bolt I note? If so these could cause you problems. These were real popular years ago but did create problems like failed springs.

Rick B.
Yeah I noticed that last year. Just not looking forward to having to replace it. From past threads I think this can be done by lifting slightly and supporting the body somehow to make space to get in there. I'll take suggestions on how best and easiest to do this.
Also I want to blow air into the entire frame to blow out any rust.
Thanks for your comments and suggestions Rick.

Thanks Dennis. I'll have to check my AIM to see what radiator baffle looks like.
The diff rubber cushions are there and look pretty new, and don't get a bang noise when shifting. Again I'll check my AIM for this. The paragon catalog diagram I checked last night didn't show one under the big washer. Do you have a pic of yours?

Edit: Looked in my AIM and there's no cushion under the big washer on the diff mount.
Also didn't see the lower metal rad baffle you refered to.
Glenn

Bubba at his best when the current exhaust was installed. All will be replaced and with the proper clamp this spring.
Thanks, Glenn

Very possible being 37 years old. Why, who knows.
I wanted to take undreside pics for a while now so I could get input for my own education and so others can see and compare there's to mine. That's what's so great about this forum.

Yes, they are missing (bubba again) and when I get the chin spoiler those brackets will be replaced and bolted properly. I have checked to see how much they move around and they are pretty snug and I would guess don't vibrate too much. Didn't notice any scrapimg marks in the paint.
Thanks, Glenn
