Tow a 68 on a UHaul trailer?
Anyone done this? I went to the website (actually I went to the Penske website) and it says my vette wont fit on the trailer, that is the trailer that the car sits entirely upon. I will not tow it with the wheels turning on the ground. Is it just tricky, ie need some extra length on the ramps or is it actually impossible? I assume the issue is ground clearance but don't really know. Just wonder what others have used to tow their C-3, especially a 68.
We are moving from Jersey to North Carolina and I am considering renting a truck to move some of our stuff in addition to getting estimates from movers, and will get an estimate from classic car movers.

I don't know the facts, but most of these trailers are sorta short, and have a bulkhead in the front. It could be that the car will sit too far back on the trailer. You'd have to take some measurements and see where the wheels would end up and assume the center of gravity. You'd want it slightly aft of the front axle, assumimg the trailer has duals.
As far as the loading goes, you may need to set the ramps on some blocks and then use add'l lumber to effectivle make them appear longer.
BTW, my trailer is a 16 ft'er and it works great.

I moved my '69 on a car hauler trailer when I moved, but it was only about 150 miles and I returned the trailer to the same place I rented it. Their only requirement was that I have a 3/4 ton or larger truck - my F250 acted like it didn't know the Vette was back there.
I placed it on the trailer backwards because it was easier, and because the car has more weight on the back wheels so the trailer had plenty of tongue weight.
My friend Randy is a truck driver with plenty of experience tightening binder chains.
Like fauxrs2 says, the bare trailer must have weighted as much as the car!

I moved my 74 on a U-Haul trailer. I had to jack up the trailer tongue as high as I could get it while attached to the pickuptruck and block up the ends of the ramps to keep from draging the frame.

Thanks for all the great replies! (nice pics too! )
I am thinking of renting a Uhaul (or Penske) truck, and the car trailer would be an additional $250. Just got a quote from Horseless Carriage (I believe they are one of the best) just a hair over $1k.
So if I am going to rent a truck to move a bunch of boxes and crap, it will be well worth it to get a trailer and move the vette myself.

Mark, I would give Cooley Enterprises a call. Attention to detail, personalized service, reasonable cost. I highly recommend them.

Being forewarned is being forearmed. You need to research the costs...including fuel....for making this U-Haul deal. And don't forget about insurance! Check with your auto insurance carrier; I bet your car won't be covered in case of an accident...and they won't write a 'rider' for that purpose [I know, I tried it]. You will have to buy U-Haul coverage at a pretty steep price.
My suggestion is to call some moving companies to see what the cost would be for them to move your car [inside their trailer]. I'm betting that it will be significantly less than total expense of going with U-Haul.

Rented a truck and a car trailer in L.A. They didn't have a pick up truck so I ended up with a big truck, with just the original motor and some parts in the back of the truck towing the car trailer. Towed a 69 vert my brother bought from LA to SF going 70 to 80 mph. Lucky I didn't get stopped! Rented it for oneway trip.. Worked out great.

I looked into a U-Haul trailer when I brought my 81 home from Ohio. I ended up renting a trailer from a local hardware store for much less money and hassle. U-Haul problems that may or may not be a problem for you:
- Local rentals stipulated in-state use only. If I was going to haul a car home from the next state, I was required to do a one-way rental from Ohio to Michigan. When I asked the hardware store if I could take it to Ohio to bring a car home, their only stipulation was that I'd bring the trailer back.
- Stories here, on other sites, and from friends of the poor / mixed quality of U-Haul trailers. It seemed to be a crap shoot whether you got a serviceable trailer or not. With the hardware store, I could inspect the exact trailer I'd be using.
- Stories here, on other sites, and from friends of lost / ignored reservations. People would show up to pick up their trailer or truck only to be told that it was rented the day before and they didn't have anything else. One buddy asked about the validity of the reservation and the independent U-Haul agent said that many customers don't pick up what they reserved so they generally ignore reservations.

I used the same trailer from U-Haul as Ed-T - took the car to Kissimmee on it this winter. NO issues at all, car fit great.
U-Haul will only rent that trailer to you if you have a 1/2 ton on bigger and it is set up to tow 6500 lbs (class 4 hitch I think).
Easy as all heck to get the car on and off!!

Here's a great page regarding trailing a vette, no matter which trailer you choose.

One thing in particular to pay attention to is the securing of the car to the trailer.

Looks like you're breaking it out of jail . But more to the point, I've rented u-hauls many times for moving friends and their belongings but their customer service has certainly gone down hill the last few times, the independant dealers dont seem to care if you get what you've reserved/rented/paid a deposit for or not. I'd be prepared for a disappointment and if things work out well, then you're pleasently surprised. Good Luck, Peace,,,Moosie
