When we moved from Lafayette IN to Peoria IL , we used Allied . They put the vette in the back end of the rig and all the house stuff in the front . They have walls built into the side of the wagon that folds out to give a seperate compartment if needed - worked fine for me If you are gonna use a mover - it may be the way to go.

As you can see , they used a local recovery vehicle with a tilt bed (basically tilted and slid down off the back of the truck to the floor) It was a bit tricky getting the vette onto the bed without the front end hitting the floor - had to drive the front wheels up onto 4x2's in front of the ramps in order to lift the front end up When we got it to Peoria , we pulled the truck up to the loading bay at the allied wharehouse and just drove the car straight out and I drove it home from there - if we did it again , I would load at the warehouse too and save all of the hassle with the recovery truck.

Since you were born in 1905 gas prices have really gone up. Have someone move it for you in an enclosed trailer. Gas, insurance are expensive. For piece of mind go with a classic car mover.

I wouldn't use U-Haul if they paid ME to use them. Last time I used them their truck broke down. Called the number they give for such things and they gave me a confirmation number and said they would send another truck. Never happened. They left me stuck. Got hold of the independent U-Haul that rented the pos and gave them the confirmation number that U-haul gave me and was told that meant nothing. When they finally picked up their broke down pos, they tried to charge me for the time the truck was broken down! Manager at the store said the "truck runs fine" and called me a liar. After darn near going over the counter and whoopin the tar our of him, I didn't end up paying for the breakdown time. They still left me stranded. Went online and found that U-haul has a habit of doing these things. Find another company or live with the possible screwing you may get.

I'm moving from OK to AZ in a couple months and have been planning on just towing my 71 on a uhaul trailer behind a uhaul truck. However, it seems like there's a lot of mixed feelings on the subject. Britvette or anyone else...do you guys know how much Allied or another major moving company would charge me to put my vette in the back of the semi trailer (like Britvette did)? That would be ideal, but not sure how much something like that costs.

Also, the trip is approx 1000 mi...is that just too far to trust a vette on a uhaul trailer?

...this is a recipe for disaster-yeah, yeah, I know several people have done it, without accident, but to do it SAFELY, an F-250, Chevy/GMC 2500 or larger should only be used. Way too many horror stories out there.

...have towed probably over 20,000mi since '92 with a trailer, so I know a little in what I'm talking about.

The small suvs have independent rear suspension. You will crap your pants when you hit a turn and everything starts into a side to side wag, and one way out of it is coming to a stop. The other way out involves turning the truck over. Lots of rollovers with the explorer class vehicles.

I just rented a uhaul trailer to tow my 1980 from Columbus Oh to B.G. OH. About a 2.5hr drive one way.

Towed with a 03 Expedition, had no issues at all, did not go much over 65mph, it was perfect, pretty much did not know it was back there, smooth as can be.

Total cost for the trailer was $49 + $8 for trailer ins. Reg ins covers the car not the trailer so had to get the additional ins cost of $8 just in case somethin would happen.

So for less than $65 out the dorr it worked out real good. Just inspect the trailer good, check all lights, tire restraints, chains etc.

Only tiny issue is when you (if you can) drive it up on the trailer the rubber front air dam pc almost rubbs the ramp, but it was so small of a rubb as soon as it hit it was back off again. so no big deal. Just be carefull to not drive up the ramps to quick.

Good luck!

I moved to NC in June 2008 (notice I started this thread March 08) and hired the full service mover for my household goods and entrusted my vette to Horseless Carriage. For around $1000 I was very happy.

Took a nice drive yesterday!

I brought my 71 from Oklahoma to Texas on a Uhaul trailer. The trans cross member will hit when loading If you can level out the ramps, clearance won't be an issue.

Hey, there's a classy way to move that Stingray. S-w-e-e-t. Glad they did their part to your satisfaction.

FWIW: U-Haul hosed me on 2 separate trips about 7 yrs apart from each other regarding "car transporters". I swore them off after that; always used Penske since.

For interstate travel, Penske had the best gear, in the best shape, and provided the best service for reasonable money. Towing my stuff got to the point that I finally invested in my own unit. Now I'm fat, 24x7x365.

I was in Fla on vacation in the wife's Full size Chevy van. Seen a NOM 1967 RS/SS on a side road. Drove around the block and asked if it was for sale. Guy said yes $4500. Bought the car for $3800 cash.(in Jan 2000) Bought a bolt on small hitch for $100 and a set of the magnetic base lights that mount on the trunk. Rented the U-haul car dolly you put the front tires on and unhooked the driveshaft at the rear and bailing wired it up to the muffler. Bought the u-haul insurance. When pulling out of a fuel stop in GA the left quarter panel hit one of those pipes to protect the pumps. When I got it home called on the insurance. U-haul paid $1150 to replace quarter panel (GM) and paint. Rental and insurance was under $150. Wish I would have kept the Camaro. 1300 mile trip.

I trailered my 68 from Georgia to NJ in a snow storm with a uhaul trailer. Had no problems.
Just make sure you tie that sucker down and be careful when opening the door on the trailer, some trailer wheel well covers actually slide over to clear the driver door. Drive slow.

if you use a u hall be careful when you open your door to get out of the car . the door may hit the trailer fender.

Got my trailer from here http://trailers4you2.com/ for around $2500.00 delievered few yrs ago, use it all the time for different things. Pulls fine behind a Tahoe once I put overload bags on. Here's a link to another forum that I posted some pic http://1-4u-computer-graphics.com/ya...50463465/17#17
