Default What are you getting for Gas Mileage?

Hey Guys,
I am in the process of looking at a couple 77 Vettes. They are pretty stock, good running 4spd cars. (stock meaning they have an exhaust, headers, and alum intake but no motor work)
Before everyone starts beating me up about "drive it like you stole it", I was just wondering if anyone can tell me what they are averageing for gas mileage. With the crazy gas prices and this car being my summer commuter car, I was just wondering what to expect.
Yes I beat on my cars and enjoy driving them but I can also drive like an old lady when I have to.
Thanks for the help
Jimbo

79 L82 4 speed 4:56 gear Heavy Foot-drive it like I stole it!
I average about 15 mpg overall. I'm happy with that considering my gear.

With a stock gear, you should be between 15 and 20 mpg if the car is in tune.

I've upgraded my whole ignition system and run Royal Purple. I've got a high-rise intake and a base with stators on it. I also rebuilt my original carb. During the day on the highway, I can hit the lower 20's (3.36 rear end). On long trips that span day and night, I tend to average 18 mpg. I would expect to hit 25 mpg easily if I had an overdrive...

Thanks for the info, thats great that you can average that kinda mileage with a car thats 30yrs old.
How about around town mileage (thats where I do most of my driveing).
I know its going to change from car to car but its nice to get an idea.
Thanks again

I get 10-12 mpg in the '76 with my stock L-48 setup. Hoping that will change with the Stan's headers, true dual exhausts, Lars rebuilt carb, rebuilt/curved dizzy, and advanced timing/tuning. We'll see....

My 454 got three blocks to the gallon the day I brought it home

Hopefully it improves when the car is done.

I have a '77 L48 4spd and I average about 15.5MPG in mixed driving. This includes city and highway speeds up to 65MPH (or thereabouts). I have the highway gear ratio of 3.08.

When I've had an autocross event during the fuel load, the MPG drops to more like 9MPG overall.

I do know that my carb was leaking fuel out of the float bowl into the engine after a heat soak, so after I'm done fixing that, the MPG might improve, but I'm expecting the change to be a small one at best.

I don't baby the Vette or any car I own -- I put my foot in it when its called for (good thing I don't have a gauge to tell me how much those things cost me)

Other than that ...the car is in a reasonable state of repair, and I run premium fuel.

Brian.

about 14 before tuning. Used to be 12 inches of vacumn, now it's 16-17 inches, so hopefully it will improve from there. 79 4 spd, 3.70 gear, mildly modified.

My D.D. Volks Passat wagon w/4 cylinder turbo, 5-speed manual, 28-31, avg 75 mph.
