Rear storage compartment rivot question
Hello,
While removing the carpet from the rear storage area,
I also removed the rear storage compartment. It was a bugger
removing the rivots from the door hinge to the body. They were so big.
I had to grind them off the hinges and then straighten the hinges as
they bent when I removed the storage doors. I've seen pics of
the new rivots and wondered if anyone has replaced them.
If so, how did you do it and do you have pics?

Hi
I used aluminum rivets (1/2 dia' head, 3/16 dia' x 7/16 long)

You need air hummer gun with correct head 3/16 dia' to punch them.
When you punch you need to hold the rivet head with an iron piece.
I bought a used hummer gun & new head on Ebay ($50+$5)

To properly buck a rivet you put the gun with a flush set on the head of the rivet. Then place the bucking bar on the protruding tail of the rivet. You you turn it around with the gun on the tail you run the risk of driving the rivet out of its hole and not getting the head seated against the material being bucked.

Great advice so far!!! Be careful where you by the rivets. There are some aluminium rivets out there that are VERY hard and are difficult to set even with the air tool. Ask for a truthful answer before you buy.

Hello,
Thanks to all for your responses thus far.
I'm assuming that without rivoting the hinges
to the frame, to the fiberglass compartments themselves,
there is nothing keeping the door frame assembly rigidly in place?
The hinges could still be mounted to the doors and frame,
only the frame would basically be resting on top of the carpeting
and every time I opened a storage compartment door, the whole
frame assembly would lift up?

You are correct Rudy.
Try finding a mechanic working at a FBO. Fixed Base Operation, at a local small airport by you. Ask him to come out and buck those rivets for you. $20 some gas money and a beer or two should do you right
