I suppose you're right. If he could be a little more tactful with his comments, he wouldn't upset so many people.

Is it true that the factory style exhausts significantly reduces horsepower?
I love the look of the factory style side exhausts tho.

Headers $600 ceramic Hooker Super Competition
Shields $350
Sidepipes $200 and change
Muffler inserts $180

The look on my neighbour's face when I start it on Sunday morning...
PRICELESS

As for horsepower gains...there has to be. I will let you know when they are installed. But going from the old rams horns to headers...pressure drop at every step. Should be very noticeable. I also replaced the intake and carb. Cant wait

Look at the pic below. SPecifically look at the difference between the stock ram's horn and the headers. THere should be huge increase in flow and drop in resistance. Translation - more horsepower. How much...Iwont know until I get them installed.

I answered your PM, but in case you didn't get it...

For all the peices from Year One it's around $3k for the mid-year 2 inch small block side pipes.

Just the covers are $700 per side.

It took some getting used to, but I really like the look.

Several C2 people at shows have asked about buying the whole setup right off my '71 as is.

I'm not sure what YO is selling, but the fiberglas '69 look-alike covers are made by Eckler's and run around $300. Paragon has the original tooling for the 69 covers, and their proper chromed aluminum/fiberglas covers run around $2500 for the pair.

BTW, stock side exhaust covers don't require the crappy stock exhaust pipes. Several members have built better-performing systems that tuck up under the 69 covers. I'm in the process of doing so right now.

Yep,
Back in the day lots of guys used the fiberglass covers, a set of glasspacks and had the muffler shop bend up some pipes. A somewhat more affordable option for the original equipment look.

We were talking about mid-year pipes and aluminum covers like I have on my '71.

Do you have pictures or how to do instructions of the build?

Default Change of Heart....

Well guys after much debate I have decided to CAN the idea of new side exhaust. Dont get me wrong I think they would have looked nice but with them being so close to the ground and how crappy the roads in NY are combined with the idea of trying to keep them looking sparkling clean all the time I have decided to go with a set of new headers and out the back like the orginal equipment exhaust. I just think in the long wrong I will be happier and it will last longer...Thanks for you imput...

There's one thread I had bookmarked. I'll get some pics when I'm further along with mine.

Forgive my ignorance...
So, the idea is to put one open tube all the way from the header to the side of the car. No mufflers needed? Wouldn't this make the motor extremely loud?

I love loud rumbling mufflers, but not too loud.
