Default New weight achieved: 2.775 lbs!

I've just put again my '77 (with about 2 gallons of gas) on the harbour official scale: 2.775lbs (1.260kg)

With a few more mods coming next month hope to get around 2.700lbs pretty soon...

I didn't realize these things were so heavy until I got my 79. Geez so fat for such a tiny car. Any non-invasive things I can do to shave some weight off?

Don't forget to use only synthetic wax, it's much lighter than carnauba

Do you mean these?

Gutting the doors will give you about 30lbs off the board each side, included the unbelievable heavy power window motor, ancillaries and an useless side protection steel bar, which actually would get itself a deathly bullet in case on side crash...

Don't forget the pre-race dump. That'll net you a few more lbs.

Look, first of all you should shave all those soft a$$ amenities like A/C, heavy soft leather old fart seats (and their supports! these supports are sooo bloody heavy ), heater and ancillaries, power windows.

Then those mods that are also performance mods: front and rear suspensions and all round brakes...

With the above simple custom moves you're already from 150 to 200 lbs lighter...maybe more.

I would gut all the metal from the doors, if you have any side protection in your foll cage. Bond the hinges directly to the fiberglass shell, with maybe a piece of wood for the spacer.

The doors are completely gutted, i just left only those hard bits needed to hold properly the door covers and the closing hardware.

Since i bought my '77, i noticed the huge weight of the doors (when shutting them down or while opening them), now they are a delight to open and close, the outer FG shell does not weight more then 8/10lbs and the whole door must be a coupe of lbs on top of that.

You know your car now weighs as much as an early '70s 240Z, and that's light. could you list the major weight saving mods that saved you 800 pounds!, from stock? just the majors,, I know all the little one must be quite a few. C.

yes, i know the car is now light like an euro sportcar, or even lighter, and you can feel all the advantages on the road.

I'll try to summarize the parts i've changed or modded :

front transverse monospring kit
rear composite spring
tubular a-arms
new lightweight (willwood) brakes
new engine (alu heads, pumps, intake)
No A/C+ancillaries
No heater+ancillaries
no front and rear steel defends
aftermarket hood
fixed lights
lightweight seat (with alu support)
new lighter full interior (ecklers)
lexan windshield
no wipers, no motor
no power windows+no windows
gutted doors
gutted t-tops
race battery
lighter (minilite) wheels+biasply (hoosier) tires
alu radiator

well, these are those that come to my mind right now, there is bit and pieces here and there that i might have forgotten to state...

next mods:

custom alu front end support
custom rad support
round tube crossmember
no e-brake
alu engine block
lighter side exhaust (not the hooker style sidepipes though)
rear lightweight rotors and hats
carbon halfshafts
fuel cell

For sure there is around 150lbs still to shave, or maybe more.

Sorry to bring up an old thread.

Panic, do you have any more pics of the insides of your doors? I'm about to do the same to mine and I'd like a little more of a visual aide.
