Stingray
Hey everyone,
I have a 1979 corvette and I have been told by some people that 79's are stingrays and I have also been told that they are not.
Can anyone clear this up for me?
Thanks.

Sometime before the '78 model year (not sure which year), Chevrolet stopped putting the "Stingray" emblem on Corvettes. 1968 cars didn't have the emblem either.
Does that make the cars any less "Stingrays"? I guess if you want to be a purist since Chevrolet stopped identifying them as such, but essentially they're the same car outside of detail differences.
You can call your car whatever you like.

Stingray is just a name, nothing more, nothing less. It does not make the car more of a hot rod or more desirable.

I have a '72 with the Stingray badge and although I don't refer to it as a "Stingray", I regard it as one.
Also have a '79 and think of it as a Corvette only.

1976 was the last year GM officially designated a C-3 corvette as a "Stingray". It's your car and you can call it anything you want. Mine is officially a "Stingray" but I have called it many different names over the years - mostly when working on it.

Bill Mitchell became head of GM Styling in 1958...he had been with GM since the 30's and was a race car driver...the 63 Corvette (named Sting Ray) was built on his race car design. The 68 Corvette (named Stringray as he originally intended) was his natural progress on that design. Bill Mitchell retired in 1977...in his honor the 77 did not get the Stingray tag. But, it is still his styling and should be considered a Stringray.
So, all C2's should be considered Sting Rays.
All C3's should be considered Stingrays.

The C3 design and styling was based on the "Stingray" concept. As long as the basic car uses that styling, it would be a Stingray design.

I think it's the same guy,, he just re-registers and post the same question, over and over again........
OK, pic a number between one and ten.
was it an odd number? ok, then it's a stingray
It was even,, ok, then it's not.
