1976 4spd coupe, 37k miles - value?
I've run across a '76 coupe with a 180hp base motor, M21 4 speed (one of 2,088 manuals out a 46,558 cars made), and 37k original miles. The car is very original - including mouse turds, mildew and a bit of surface rust on engine and frame that came from outside storage. Decent bright blue original 10-footer paint and nice oyster leather interior that should clean-up pretty well. I think I can get it for just north of $6k. What say?

Sounds familiar. A POS is around 5K. I think 6K could be a steal........

I think you may be misinterpreting the numbers. There were 46,558 Vettes produced in 76. 2088 had the m-21 option but that required an L-82, of which there were 5720. 36,625 had the M-40 auto. 9933 4 speeds minus 2088 M-21's is 7845. Unless I did the math wrong....

I will ask the obvious that no one else has thought of: How is it mechanically? How does it run?
I only show 42K miles on my odometer. That is when it broke!!

I have not driven the car yet. I can read the wear and tear good enough to believe the mileage is correct. And the oil change stickers in the door jamb support the miles too. It's just that it's sat in a moist climate for a while. I didn't have time to drive it when I saw it. The owner claims it runs fine - but it's gotta run better with some simple maint. I'm going to drive it in a few days, then if it runs right, make an offer.
Rat raisins, anyone?

If its mileage is as you say and its pretty solid, the price is about right, although I would still offer $5000 and see where that goes.
The mouse turds worry me more than anything else. Make sure you have a good look at it running, test drive it, and test all the electrical accessories to make sure the mice haven't chewed any wires. Also hope they don't have nests in the car or its going to stink something awful.
Other than that, the rest sounds cosmetic. A good original motor and drivetrain are getting harder and harder to come across these days.
Best of luck.

IMO:
thats the value of an ordinary 76, this one with extreemly low miles & 4spd sounds like a steal.............
ask for less of course..........
then run & run fast or your going to jail for "STEALING"

I agree, a numbers match 4 speed is a good deal at $6k. You should grab it, it's only going up in value.
I also agree with r.p.m. as to the confusion of your original post.
There were almost 10,000 4 speeds in '76. If it's an M21 car it would have the L-82, so if it's an L-48 base it will have the M20. Is it an L code or X code car?
Either way, it's worth buying.
