1968 VIN Codes (part of a series)
Please Note – this is NOT going to be 100% accurate. Numbers changed, I coulda mis-typed, but this is the best I can do as a back yard mechanic to help you out. This came from 3 different books, and I tried to put all 3 into one page for ya. Please look for the book CORVETTE BY THE NUMBERS for more accurate information. Thanks.
1968 Corvette Basics:
Base Engine
L75 327 V8, 300 HP 10.25:1
Optional Engines
L79 327 V8, 350 HP 11.0:1, 5 main bearings, Hyd Lifters, HP Cam
L36 427 390 HP
L71 / L89 427 V8, 435 HP, 11.0:1, Alum Heads, 3 Holley 2 Barrel Carbs
L88 427 V8, 560 HP, 12.5:1, Ultra Hi-Performance Cam
DECODING THE VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION NUMBER
VIN # is stamped on the inside of the A pillar windshield.
Convertible Vin #’s were 194678S100001 TO 194678S128566
Coupe Vin #’s were 194378S100001 TO 194378S128566
Symbols, Letters and their meaning:
1st Chevrolet
2nd and 3rd Body Series (94 = Corvette)
4th and 5th Body Style (67 = Convertible, 37 = Coupe
6th Symbol indicates Year (8 = 1968)
7th Symbol indicates Assembly Plant (S = St Louis)
The last six symbols are the production numbers.
1968 – 1978 Corvette Trim Tag ID
Upper right corner is body build date
A = Aug 1967
B = Sept 1967
C = October 1967
D = November 1967
E = December 1967
F = January 1968
G = February 1968
H = march 1968
I = April 1968
J = May 1968
K = June 1968
L = July 1968
M = August 1968
The Second and Third numbers were the day of the month that production of this car started.
On the left side is a word TRIM followed by the following:
STD = Black
407 = Red
411 = Blue
414 = Bright Blue
425 = Orange
435 = Tobacco Brown
442 = Gunmetal Gray
402 = Black Leather
408 = Red Leather
415 = Blue Leather
426 = Orange Leather
436 = Tobacco Leather.
Just right of that is the word PAINT followed by the following:
900 = Tuxedo Black
972 = Polar White
974 = Rally Red
976 = LeMans Blue
978 = International Blue
983 = British Green
984 = Safari Yellow
986 = Silverstone Silver
988 = Cordovan Maroon
992 = Corvette Bronze
ENGINE CODES
1968 and 1969 consist of 7 characters:
1st is Assembly Plant
2nd and 3rd are Assembly Month
4th and 5th are Engine Code Suffix
Assembly Plants (Some engines produced at some plants were used in other cars.)
F = Flint Motor Facility (No Corvette Engine this year from this plant)
K = McKinnon Industries (No Corvette Engines this year from this plant)
S = Saginaw Service (No Corvette Engines this year from this plant)
T = Tonawanda
V = Flint Engine Plant High Performance
