new accel dfi and my dyno numbers.....
I am going to pick up my 1981 from Dynotune Speed and Performance today. They got the dynotuning with the new accel dfi done yesterday. Hopefully I like the results.
I haven't seen the dyno sheet yet but he told me on the phone that it made 270 HP and 480 ft. lbs. torque. The HP number seems low to me, but then again he said it made 370 ft lbs. at 1500 RPM. He didn't rev it past 5600 rpm. That's a nice torque number and is what I was shooting for when I built the 406, but It would be nice to have a higher HP number just for the sake of telling people who don't understand these things. It's easy to tell somebody who isn't a gearhead that you have 300+ hp and they think you have something, but if you tell them you have 270 HP they think hopped up rice burner hp.
I personally think that 270 hp and 480 torque at the wheels is plenty respectable especially for a motor that I built myself. I see no reason to be too ashamed of those numbers.
I'll post some pics and impressions sometime this weekend.

I am not one to brag unless I can back it up, but with 480 torque all you gotta do is put them in the seat and I bet they will be impressed. I told gator79 that my heads were probably limiting my hp but the torque should be really good. His response was "Ill take torque any day, I'm not trying to run 160mph". I couldn't argue with that.

It is a multi-port system with a throttle body set where a carb would be. It's not a tuned port the way I understand it because it doesn't have the tuned runner intake.
I had to fine-tune on the tv cable (did I mention how helpful the fine folks at bowtie overdrives are???? ) and for some odd reason the guys at the shop didn't hook up the tach and the check engine light so I will need to figure that out.
Anybody here know how to hook up either one of those items??

The tq looks great! But the hp seems very, very low. Other than dfi, I dunno what's in your 406 & drivetrain ... but w/480 rwtq I'd expect at least 75-100 more rwhp. I have to admit, while I have much experience with engine dyno, I have very little chassis dyno exp. Maybe the disparity between rwhp & rwtq has to do with an automatic trans/torque convertor and their torque multiplication effect? Dunno?

my cam is a .467"/.494" lift, 278/290 duration hydraulic flat. Sportsman II heads, 11:1 CR. I think it could use more cam. Maybe a roller setup sometime in the future.
I need to clarify. He told me 480 torque on the phone, but last night after I returned from a camping trip I looked at the dyno sheet and it says 278.9 hp and 396.1 torque. He must have meant it made 480 for a spike or something. It's amazing how flat the air/fuel graph is. It is between 13 and 13.7 all the way through the pull. The car really does run nice and pull nice. It's real fun to drive.
