Default broke a bolt - opinions wanted

in the circle - is what is now a very short stud. It use to be a bolt for my thermostat housing. I was replacing the thermostat and temp sensor in the head and giving her a coolant flush - figured these are items that I should do as I replace the coolant overflow bottle that had developed 2 big holes in it. When I got her a year ago - all we did was check the fluid levels, so I figured that I would do this now since I had not done a flush yet.

I have a buddy that wants me to get a carb from him - probably will. What I am thinking is should I go ahead and get a new intake (will need for the new to me carb) or fix and clean this intake and use the q-jet. The q-jet needs a rebuild.

If I go the new intake route - I need a new air filter and cover and drop base for the air filter cause the new intake will be taller than the old one.

all is not lost....with the thermostat housing you have the perfect "jig" to hold the drill bit to drill this out if you need to....i would clean it up really well including using a wire brush around the stud and then try soaking it for a really long time with a penetrant and then try to turn it out...if it breaks or just wears away then cut it flush and put the housing back on and use that as a jig to drill a hole in it for an extractor or even a heli coil repair....try finding a reverse drill bit and it may grab the stud and turn it out ...good luck, and resize your pictures to no bigger then 650x650

Put a 9/16 nut over the stud and weld the nut to the stud and let heat soak . Put socket on 9/16 nut and remove stud.

I've seen too many posts like this so I put some grade 8s in my new intake.

I would not waste my time because even if you fix it, it will never
really be that good. Just get another intake already. Suggest
Edlebrock Performer EPS with Endurashine, $200.00.
It also adds Horse power. See pics on my webpage.

I agree with the vicegrips, should take it right out of there. Aluminum manifold(L82?). Where the bolt broke up high like that it most likely seized to the aluminum thermostat housing. Did you have to pry the housing off the broken bolt or did it lift right off? Happens quite often, steel seizing to aluminum where water is involved. Bet it screws right out.

it is an L82 and the bolt broke up by the head. The cover lifted off easily.
I was leaning towards getting the exact intakethat Dmonsvette suggested anyway - extra hp and putting shiny stuff on the motor - bling

I will prob try to get the bolt out just to have the old intake This just makes me buy the intake and carb a little before I wanted.

I probably should tell yall the rest of the story.
My brother in law came over to turn wrenches with me - actually for me because it has only been a month since I had surgery and the docotr has not released me to do anything yet. He actually broke the bolt head off. he feels really bad. I told him not to worry about it. It broke really easily and would have broken even if I had been pulling on the wrench
