A few weeks ago, someone posted a link to a guy who painted a Charger and a couple of bugs using rustoleum/tremclad and a roller. Well I said what the heck (being the cheapskate that I am), so I thought I'd give it a try on one of my t-tops. I was so impressed with the results, that I'm actually gonna paint the whole car this way. Besides the ease and lack of a mess and the $ saved, it gives me the ability to touch up later on, or paint any intricate detail with a perfect matching color. check it out, that's my son's Z06, not mine, actually not his either, most of it belongs to the bank.
It's one of the t tops off my primer '72. A gallon of paint is less than $20. The materials to paint the one t top was about 90 cents. To paint the whole car should take less than a gallon of paint, maybe a gallon of mineral spirits, plus rollers and wet/dry paper, should be able to stay under $50 for the whole job. It will takes about 6 to 8 thin coats. It's gonna take a couple weeks to finish prepping the body, and a couple weeks to paint. I'll take pictures as I go.
If your paint job turns out well. I will fly you to Atlanta, buy your beer, food, provide your lodging, offer you my neighbor's first born and pay you $750.00 to paint my car.

No way a paint roller and brush is going to look anything but a bubba job. It won't even look good from 10 feet.
I wouldn't do it. Back when we were kids we did a few cars like that and we thought it was great until it dried and we really got a good look at what we had done.
Talk about a case of orange peel

Plus, I've seen what this stuff looks like in 3 - 4 years...

Then again I've seen some "painters" use a quality equiptment and have it look like it was done with a mop.
Back in the day I spray painted a few cars using acrylic laquer. You'd have to color sand and rub out, but the finish was smooth as glass. This job is very similar. When using the small roller and thinning the paint with mineral spirits, the coats are very thin and sanded with 600 grit between coats. After about 6 coats, i sanded using 800, then 1000 grit, than I polished with the white turtle was polishing compound. I finished with a little wax shop safe cut. I'll take a few close up pictures and post them in about an hour. see ya...
About 15 years ago the airline that I work for had a boeing 737 that the paint on top off the fuselage was peeling so they had us sand and prepare the surface and they bought some special kind of paint [I dont remember the type] but the directions said to apply with rollers so we did. It actually layed real good and looked real good after it cured. It was not vette quality but it shined and had a smooth texture and never peeledthe whole time we owned the aircraft.

Here's a few more pictures including some close-ups. The coats go on so thin, that there's no chance of the paint running. The only thing is, that around intricate parts of the body (around the tail lights, vents, etc. I'll have to use a brush). I'm kinda excited about getting started, but I don't want to start taking things off until after the So Cal Hooter's run.
