WTH??...Cops in Cali. are now Ricer/Tuner experts?

>>>[I look for the large after-market muffler...chances are I can hear it before I can see it because they are loud."

Yep, that *can-0-bee's* muffler is a dead give away for an illegal car....sheesh!

He then sees a "wrench" needed to open the hood...I dunno, looked like Vice-Grips to me....you gotta watch this video...its so educational!!

Heh....I got stopped twice due to the exhaust on my Saturn...The first cop said it was illegal because it was modified from stock, and I told him it wasn't, because it was still smog legal and it was under 95 db. The second cop tried to tell me that my car was too low due to me "cutting my springs."

I showed him the window sticker with the dealer modifications showing the springs were Eibachs installed by the dealer. The Eibachs lowered the car by 1 1/2" in the front and 1 1/3" in the rear. I also explained that I wouldn't be one to cut the springs because it affects spring rates and can actually worsen the suspension.

The cop let me go because he couldn't nick me for the reason he stopped me for...

Let's see. . .they are to enforce the law, they make a training video to educate the LEO's, but there are thousands of ricers on the streets of Cali. and more being modified each day. Sounds like just another tool to hassle teenagers with. I'd rather they make a training tape on how to educate the youngsters on the dangers of street racing. JMO.

Ghey.

For one thing, I think CA is way too restrictive on vehicles to begin with.

But more importantly I think it's funny to say that just because someone has aftermarket exhaust, variable timing, CAI, or any other number of easy bolt on mods means that someone is street racing the vehicle. Lots of people do bolt-ons to make the car run more effeciently, not necessarily race. Or if they do race it's at the track. Of course that's the more responsible enthusiast.

I understand that street racing has become a huge problem everywhere. But I think that educating people is the key to helping that problem. I don't think that possible unecessary harrasment is the answer. That'll only make people feel stereotyped and fuel their distrust of police.

Just my .02 for whatever it may or may not be worth.

I found the video really creepy for a number of reasons. They assume that these mods make the driver guilty of street racing. A fart pipe? STICKERS?? What if the driver only races at a sanctioned track? So many of these so-called modified cars are so much slower than many stock unmodified cars. So what do you really accomplish by hassling drivers? What bothers me the most is that if a police officer wanted to apprehend the most modified cars he would simply park outside of a dragstrip on import night. That would be a great way to write a lot of tickets and push these racers back on to the hidden streets.

Oh My GOD! Illegal modifcations under the hood! The Horror, The Horror!

It's nice to know that in Kalipornia, the cops have all the murders, rapes, child abductions, child abuse, theft, robbery, etc under control so they can focus on the real important crimes that impact the lives and jeopardize the safety of the citizens.

I've got a better idea: GIVE THEM A PLACE TO LEGALLY RACE!!!

The only 4 (and soon to be 3) places that have legal drag racing in Southern California are:

1) California Speedway (on specific dates only) in Riverside.

2) Irwindale Dragstrip (Pretty much Test-n-Tune Thursdays are it, and it's only an 1/8th mi)

3) Barona Dragstrip (which seems to do ok with Test-n-Tunes on the weekends, but it's still only 1/8th mi)

4) Racelegal drags at Qualcomm Stadium (also 1/8th mi, and may be going away soon if Alex Spanos gets the city to give him the stadium land to redevelop).

Pomona used to have Test N' Tunes, but not where I've seen kids be able to bring their street cars to the track. LA Raceway used to have a drag strip too, but last I'd heard it got closed down...

Hey, I live in Southern California and I've NEVER seen a 45 year old white guy driving a car like that.
They would never stop that guy in that car...This video is so "UN-RACIALLY PROFILED" it's complete nonsense.

If any of you believe this "training" video reflects real California street life you are completely sucked in.

This video (right or wrong)represents just one SDPD approach to curbing street racing which has been a problem here since 1/4 mile drag strips have closed down in San Diego...and I am NOT a fan of the SDPD...I live out in the unincorpated area of San Diego County...
There are only two dragstrips now, both 1/8 mile.....ricerville at Qualcomm and another strip at Barona which cars can run for NHRA points...but,the "ricers" I'm refering to would never compete at a drag strip if available.......those are the ones causing the issues...nothing worse than two skinheads in ricers doing 80-100mph running down the freeway changing lanes and passing other vehicles using the shoulder...
I've seen this happening numerous times....very freakin dangerous and YOU would be pissed off if it happened while you are there seeing it...
But I think the video clearly shows who they are targeting...
The "sticker/decal" thing is just ridiculous though...in fact..STUPID..

Interesting. Don't know what else to say. You just wonder how far this kind of stuff could eventually trickle down.

I'm sorry, I just don't understand the urge to buy a honda and start modifying it. Maybe it's the girls that fuels the fad..

I might be showing my ignorance on the subject, but will this crackdown include ALL cars, or is it more of a focus on the current street racing scene. Will modified classic, muscle and sports cars be the target of this new crackdown?

Heh well I think cops actually only pay attention to the imports more than the muscle cars. I've driven around with no plates and extremely loud exhaust MANY times in my vette around cops and actually never had a problem. Right now I've got the lil red paper in my back window and open headers and cops still leave me alone with open headers. However, I make sure I don't punch the gas when I'm near them so it's not as obvious. Reminds me, I have to go down to the DMV to give me a new red paper that has a 7 on it because they won't send me my plates until July.

...Guess Kalifornia cops aren't smart enough to catch real criminals like rapists, murderers, drug smugglers, illegal aliens-so let's go after the sitting duck motorists to show the taxpayer(and Kalifornia gubbermint)that they are doing something for their paycheck.
