Help me out here ! Over the last 25 years I have owned five 68-72 Corvettes. Three have been T-Tops. My current 72 (T-Top) has a hinged - drop down window storage tray under the rear decking. It has a chrome push button latch which allows it to swing down and then re-close with the removable rear window neatly stowed away. This is a heavy optioned - #s match car with what appears to be an original 52,000 miles. I have NEVER seen this item on my previous vettes. Was it there and I just didn't slow down enough to see it OR is this an option that I have never heard of ???

I believe it was standard for all 68-72 coupes.

my 72 has it and its not listed on the gas tank build sheet as an option so i assume its standard at least for a 72

Standard equipment on all Corvettes with removable rear window. It was missing from my 70 when purchased but the hinges where still there for an easy replacement. I don't know why anyone woud remove it unless it rattled a little when driving.

And if it does to the point of annoying you, ati-rattle bumpers and cushions are available from Doc Rebuild.

The tray itself and the latching mechanism was changed during the 5 years it was used. '68, '69 & '70 used a fiberboard style tray with black flocking, that was similar to that what was used in the storage compartment trays, and used rubber coated latches to secure the window. The latch was a complicated bent spring steel item that used a solid metal bar that had the words Back Window Storage raised in chrome relief.

The '71 & '72 trays were made of a fiberglass material, and used a different system to secure the window, the latch used was the same as the locks for the storage compartment lids.

fotyfobravo> Any chance you can take a couple pictures of it in your car and send them to me? I have never seen it in a car and am keen to see it...as I want to track one down for my vette (just have to wait until my vette arrives).

I completely agree, and I'm only interested because sometimes when I hit a bump in the road and the window is in the tray it'll pop loose from the latch and drop. Nothing breaks, just startling. The adjustment screws are so tight I fear breaking them if I try to correct. Stays up tight and snug when no weight in it, but I'll need to fix it someday. It's good to hear more about the design.
