what is a PROTECT O PLATE?

This plate came in the original owners manuel at the back. GM would used that plate for all warranty on the vehicle. It was used with carbon paper to make a copy for the dealer to perform the warranty. It held all the info about the vehicle on it.

Protect-o-plates were issued from 1966 thru 1972.
The metal plate was first attached to the owner's manual. Later it was affixed to a fold out pamphlet.
This plate gave the cars drivetrain information, such as the assembly date & code for the engine useage. The transmission date & type, the rear axle date & ratio.
Extremely valuable factory documentation for a 1966 to 1972 Corvette.

Great thread I've always wondered what it was too. Does anywhere offer a reproduction of your protect o plate if you give them your vin number? like they do with the window sticker?
probably not but thought I'd ask.

When was the plate made? Was the first part with the car info done at the factory and owner info added at the dealer or was it all done at the dealer? Is the owner name and address stamped in the plate like the car info or just taped on?

The metal plates were stamped by an addressograph machine at St. Louis plant, with the cars information.
The dealer would use a dynolabel machine to make the tape portion with the new buyer information and affix it to the plate for GM's warranty plan/work, at the time of sale.
The dealership would then fill out the information on the foldout pamphlet or owners manual that the plate was attached to from the factory.

I have mine for my Silver '68 coupe. The pic I posted is NOT it. I bought that at a swap meet for $5 and I use it for reference.

POP Addressograph Imprint
Does anyone have and original POP that is not attached to their Owner Protection Plan book.
I am wondering if in tiny tiny letters, the word Addressograph is imprinted on one side.
My POP for my 65 Nova is still attached to the book and no sign of the Addressograph imprint but my neighbors 67 Corvette POP is seperate from his book and the POP has this imprint.

Hi a,
The plate from my car is pretty tightly adhered to the booklet so I can't tell.
I did notice though that the clear tape that's imprinted with the buyer's name and date of sale has GM in blue letters stamped on the tape in several places.
Don't know if I've noticed that before?
Regards,
Alan

The are some very little know facts about the Protecto plate that I have found in my research of corvette documentation. Or at least I have not seen much info on the history of them.
One of the characteristics I have noticed is the imprinting of the word "addressograph". The earlier protecto plates DID NOT have the word addressograph on the plate. They started showing up on the POPs in early February 1969. The earliest I have seen on legitimate POP's was Feb 6 1969.
I have a feeling the neighbors 67 is a repro. It should not have the word "addressograph". The fact that its not attached might be another bad sign.....But my research centers around cars from 1969 so I do not know for sure if 67's are supposed to be in a booklet. But I do know, at least from what the hundreds of pictures I have of them, is that it shows Feb 69 when the word addressograph started getting stamped into the plate.
However, there are later dated POP's that do not have it. I guess it just depended on when stock started to run out newer ones came in. I am sure they did not rotate stock and whichever box was opened kinda thing is what they used. I believe all the repros have the word addressograph on them as they are made from left over stock.
The dymo tape on them usually has the blue-green GM logo but sometimes the dealer might have run out and used whatever was on hand.
