Holley 750 on my L48! New best ET Thanks LARS!
I queried Lars-the-guru before I attempted this to see where to start with jet sizes. If he comes to FL again I owe him a whole Keg.
I took the Holley 4150HP series 750 cfm off my 383 and stuck it on the L48. I know there are PLENTY of people reading this thinking: "too much carb."
I changed 3 things from last season on that motor and my best time in similar weather was 15.09. Tonight I ran a 14.60.
The only changes:
Holley 750 with mechanical secondaries
MSD 6AL with MSD distributor with no vac advance
Holley Blue electric pump
I had to rejet the carb RICHER! The L48 pulls less air through the carb than the 383. The decreased velocity results in less fuel pulled through the jets I used for the 383, so I had to richen up the primaries and secondaries as well as increase the shooter size.
Lars, thanks for the advice on this. The car runs 100 times better, and more importantly, is consistent.

Repeat after me:
There is no such thing as a carb that's "too big" for a given engine, provided it is CORRECTLY TUNED.
You could put a 1,000+CFM Dominator on top of a 302 and, if tuned correctly, it will run quite well, thank you very much. (Of course, you'd have reached the point of diminishing performance returns, but it could be made to run fine.)
Anyhow, good for you.

Do you have a stock bottom end? With the 8.5 Compression?
Carb/headers/igniton. Can go a long way

If you have a 3.70 gear you'll do even better.

Great job getting the car set up!! You just demonstrated everything I've been "preaching" here on the Forum for the past 3 years.... big carbs work great once correctly set up (I think Dude got that one from me...). As Dude says, you can put a 1050 on a 350 and it will run fine if correctly set up (click on My Corvette Photos for a pic of the small block Camaro I have set up with a 1050 Dominator on it - runs 10s). The other thing you demonstrated is that big carbs do not run rich... they actually tend to run lean due to the decreased fuel metering signal. And once set up, big carbs don't hold you back: you can run fast and consistent if the carb is not the limiting factor. Is this freakin' fun, or what??
Great job!!! Welcome to the Elite Club of the Converted Few who believe.
