I have only talked to him on the phone, but David Crane is as far out there as Pluto. Much like Goat Hill Classics, Chicago Corvette, I have never heard anything positive positive about Crane Corvette. However, I must be doing something right he has been in business for a few years.

He use to do business out of his house, ordered parts from him & well I agree with the above. Saw the car at the Palm Springs auction looked nice enough... guess it did not sell.
It's a long haul to San Diego from here to deal with someone who's reputation is cloudy. I've spent enough dough chasing down SWC's. I'll let this one pass. Still on the hunt though.
I think you made the right decision. This is a direct quote from his website:
^MASSIVE SELECTION OF BLOCKS AND HEADS-NOT THAT FREEZE CRACKED STUFF FROM BACK EAST!! INTAKES TO CHOOSE FROM THAT ARE CLEANED-MAG CHECKED- AND ALL BIG BLOCKS ARE PRESSURE TESTED TO 45 PSI AT OUR FACILITY!!!
PRO STAMPING BY THE ORIGINAL " ENGINE LOCATOR" ---SAN DIEGO. OVER 20 YEARS SERVICE
" Graining service"a "grained" block.= grained with
the factory broach lines -- direction is front to rear of the car.
"in-line with car" -------- they (GM's blcoks) never had circular machining lines
on the deck. - all the GM blocks were factory Broached or "surfaced with a Shaper" producing straight lines on all the surfaces including
the oil pan surface !!
GM broached them all -- this is necessary for correct finish before stamping for authenticy and to pass proper Judging Criteria.

Thanks to all for the heads up!!!
Call JACK MURRAY at 619-501-5066 in SAN DIEGO. He knows Crane, and really knows 63's. He has owned the 'best of the best' 63 and 64 models.
Crane has cleaned up a lot of his problems over the years, but should be 'checked'.......hell I need checking too after all these year.
with all that is said here....But also with that being said, the "crankster" can be a fair resource, if you know "exactly" what your looking at. jmho...
In 1968-1969 I was living in Coronado,CA across the bay from San Diego and I saw a 63 just like this on a car lot for sale in Coronado. It was bought by a service member. I had a 64 Corvette convertible. Remember he was street racing and had to replace the rear end. The 63 was pristine when he bought it. Don't remember his name.

My problem is that I don't know what I am looking at! I know enough from my old Corvette days the obvious problems that can be avoided but I am looking at cars with prices that have taken a while to get used too. I can remember when '63 SWC's could be had for $2k and thought that was a lot of money. I expect the money paid to accurately reflect the condition/quality of the car. I now need an expert because what used to be a $100 problem can now be a $5000 problem and they can mount up fast.
