In 1968 I traded in my 1961 Fawn Beige single top four speed C-1 for a 1966 SS396. This was in Clute Texas at a small locally owned garage called "J&R's Auto Repair".
I left to go in the Air Force and totally lost track. Any clues would be appreciated.
If you still have the vin # you can check the C1 registry.
or Dep. of Motor Vehicle do a title search good luck.
I dont know about your state, but if you dont have a vin you can check your name in DMV and see if they have records on cars you have owned. Again, good luck in your search.
Where was J&R's located in Clute? If the building is still around, you may get to backtrack through present owners to contact previous dealer. Do you have anymore details on the car? Interior color, top color, custom wheels, etc.? I'm located in Lake Jackson and can tap into local vette club members to see if any of them remember the car.
If I remember correctly it was on south-side of Plantation Dr, between the cemetery, but well before Main St. It was a small, family-owned garage and used car business. Owned by the Roberts family. Their house was right there behind the business. They had two children, son and daughter. Daughter was Becky and she was in High School in 1969.
Car was Fawn Beige, hard top only. Interior was black at that time. It did not have the original motor when I had it. The previous owner had replaced the 283 with a 327. I modified that some over the time that I had it. Installed the factory 350/350 Cam and lifters as well as an Edlebrock manifold with a 780 Holley.
Other things over the years included totally rebuilding the rear suspension (leaf springs, radius rods, ring and pinion, u-joints, etc) due to excessive drag racing out on the old FM 2004, when it really did not go anywhere.
Club meeting/Christmas party is tomorrow evening. Usually good turnout of the older club members. I'll do some asking and see if anyone remebers the car.
JPS - Checked with those that attended the club party last night and sorry to say, no one there remembered the car. There are a few that were in the club that were/are heavy in the C1 ranks that did not attend. I will be shooting some e-mails for a little folllow up.
I doubt a car like that ended up in a salvage yard. I think Music's in Brazoria is closed and his son Rick has a place opened up on old 288 between Richwood and Angleton. I'm from the Beaumont area and got here in "84. Married local so have in-laws that graduated Brazoswood in the early '70's. Have a brother-in-law that gratuated in '75 and coachs @ B'port now.
So far have not had luck with J&R's, Becky or the car. I will keep trying to touch base with others that were past members of the club. Anthing new comes around, I'll post here or PM you.
