This isn't my usual type of post, but why not gather some opinions if no one minds.
While riding around town, in a driveway with a for sale sign I came across a relatively stock looking 66 coupe with what I believe to be the original 427 (I need to confirm but lets assume that is the OM) and a working factory AC system. No other options except I believe factory leather (black).
The factory color is silver but the car is currently a non-Corvette red color with subtle flames on the front end. While the paint is fairly nice, it needs to be repainted back to silver IMHO--so assume a color change back to silver. The body looked straight and in nice condition. Well lips need to be checked but assume that they are typical of most with repairs. Big block hood. Ext chrome was nice. Replacement windshield which means a closer inspection needed but the grill center tabs lined up with the body tabs and both top and bottom screws were in place. Doors shut nice and easy on their own.
Currently with undercar exhaust AND side exhaust (for looks, I was told). Some engine parts were chromed and intake and carb are aftermarket. Recent engine rebuild. Hoses not factory.
Interior has excellent stock seats and door panels that look to be replacements. Dash looks original and in decent condition. Would replace carpets. The console has been chromed.
Frame looked clean and no visible problems.
Current family owned for 20 years and a well taken car of car that needs a re=paint to factory color, some engine parts replaced if correctness is desired, and some interior odds and ends.
Trim tag and VIN tag look unaltered.
It does need a closer inspection but given the key components of AC and big block and based on the above, what are opinions on what you would pay for his car? Assume that there are no GM docs.
Thanks!
I have two 1966 427 coupes so I am fairly aware as where the market has been and where it is currently at with this fragile economy right now. With out knowing if this car has 390 hp or 425 hp motor, I will asume that it has an original 390 hp 4-speed all original major components including air cond. but car needs repaint and car has no docs. $55,000 (6 months ago, $65,000) Have car inspected prior to purchase. Buyer beware. The best money ever spent. Good luck. James
I'd say $40,000 plus what ever the AC would add if original. There was a 1966 BB 20 year old restoration, 427/425 om no air with a spun bearing on Ebay about four weeks ago. It sold for $40,000. I also remember recently listed on the forum a 1966 BB flared wheel wells, 454 with the original block, head or two, a few other motor parts, and had a color change from black. I believe it got listed on Ebay and sold for $37,000. No air either.
You could do a search on Ebay past auctions and find them fairly easily.

We have been over this time and again..... the price that makes the seller and the buyer happy is the price they - Both Agree Upon.
Now, having said that, we can also point to deals that went sour after the fact because some detail was not understood or known or seen at the time of purchase - remember the 4 speed that was born an automatic.
After youre due-diligence is done - and you have to do that to make sure you're getting what you know is the car you want, with the options and trim/vin tag as listed, etc. etc. etc. - then start a process of negotiation.
At an asking price of 55K you should be able to drive off at some place between 50 and 55. Is that in the ballpark of what you think this car is worth?
Good luck and keep us posted as to the details and results.
WOW, looks like big block have come way down in price? Why is that? I have not seen a big block that was in good condition going for less than $60K +++ but that was some time ago. Has the market on Big blocks or all midyears taken a big dive?

Wooo there Ken, Not sure about this car. It's parked in a driveway and has a for sale sign on it..... hummmm, the barn find out on plan display. If, and only if, it's a real BB would this not be the find of the year? BB's are still getting some big $$$.
Look at the ProTeam web site. These guys are not total crooks, maybe pushing the envelope a little, but they are dealing with a buyer who is basically educated. And then look at the prices of the cars..... 139, 169 and so on and so on..... BB still get big $$$.
Hope that Midyrman has stumbled onto something really good. For 50K I'll buy it. This car is sitting in a driveway and is listed as a 66 BB 55K..... sounds like a really good deal.
As with any car that needs work, it could bleed you to death. The car needs a much more thorough inspection. Looking at the largest expense, a total strip and repaint will run $10-15k I would think. I recall not too long ago what looked to be a very nice and correct (claimed OM, I believe) 66 427 AC coupe had a hard time getting near $100k and was advertised on the forum and then auctioned on ebay. So, despite its apparent low price, having to put alot of money into the car isn't desireable either. But I too think it is priced very reasonably.
