You probably can't go to a small cap AND eliminate the separate coil since one of the reasons the large caps are so large is that the coil is integrated into the center of the cap.
If cost isn't a factor for you, MSD makes a very good "ready to run" distributor (8360) small cap that eliminates the ignition box and is a very reliable unit, unlike some of the electronic conversion kits. I have been running a MSD 8360 in a 454 boat for 15 years now with no problems. MSD also makes a tach drive small cap distributor (8572) that has a small cap. Maybe you could combine the RTR guts from the 8360 into an 8572, but would still need the external coil. Summit shows both of these and gives dimensions so you can verify the fit.

Phil,

MSD just released the"Ultra 6A" CDI box with is about the size of a pack of cigarettes, maybe slightly larger and you might be able to hide it under the ignition shielding along with the 8572 distributor that has a tach drive.

MSD is manufactured in China. But it is a us company. One can assume all the design is US.

just put a Per Tronix kit in your stock distributor. Works and a lot cheaper. I did.
