WANTED Casting 772-58X heads
#2
Do you mean 3748770? If so, my brother has a very nice date matched pair I think he will sell separate from a 58 engine he has.
If you're interested, send me an email to terryhaut@mchsi.com with your phone number and I'll have him call you right away.

Hi Terry,
I think the 770 heads are the only ones that had the X58 casting for the FI engine. I am doing some research for a customer of mine and i now believe the 772 are for the 58-61 regular passenger cars and most likely even had the 2 bbl carb.
I was trying to also find info on just what the difference was between the 770's and a 3737739 that was also used in the 283, 57-62, Corvette, FI but doesn't have the X58....
Any thoughts?
Thanks
Ben

Ben,
There was only one head number for all 58 engines - 3748770. 3737739 was the block casting number for 58 and early 59 engines. No 57-62 Corvette engines had a 3737739 head casting number. I think you're mixing up block numbers with head numbers.
If you need a pair of heads correct for any 58 engine, whether it's a single 4BBL, dual quads, or FI, they have to be 3748770. There's no other number that would be correct. Naturally , other heads will work, but not be correct.

Thanks again Jerry,
One last question. What do you think would cause the exhaust manifolds to get red hot within just a couple minutes of starting it up? Engine temp seems normal. Too much air getting in???....thanks a mil,,i really do appreciate it!

772 heads were never used in production on Corvettes in 58. The 772 heads were used on 2 barrel pass car engines.
