vettes1st, the rod I need has no casting #'s but the original # was 3864881, fits small journal Vette from 62 to 67. Standard 5.7 rod nothing fancy. The pistons are cast 3795704, standard bore flat top with 4 valve reliefs. Thanks for the quick response, Bob
Sorry Gary. If I had an engine with that date code it would be going in my '62. Most blocks I have found are either waaaay too expensive or 1500 miles away. Good luck, Bob
Scott Marzahl had a group buy for these rods some time ago. You may wish to research the archives for some information on these rods. Consensus was that these rods were an accident waiting to happen.
Are you building an engine? With standard bore pistons?
Yes, Chris, I'm building a semi-clone of a '62 340 HP. Turned chicken about using the pop-up pistons though. That's the reason I'm scrounging for a couple flat tops. Compression over 11 scares me with todays fuel. Although it will be a "high performance" motor , I really just like the solid lifter concept. Don't expect to abuse it with 45 year old rods in it. This is more of a spare motor, you know, just in case??? Bob
I have two sets that were removed from a couple of 65 blocks last summer. Will seperate or you can buy a complete set of rods and pistons at a very reasonable price. PM me at oxleyltd@mnsi.net. Rob
I'm also building a 340 clone for my '62. You might want to check the archives on NCRS for "3864881." There was a lot of discussion there earlier this year or last about small journal rods.
I'm currently redoing a '57 Vette as it might have looked on the street in the mid 60's. The complete running gear had been changed out years ago to a 1962 engine, 4 speed transmission and rear end. I've got the rolling chassis completed and just got the engine block back from the machine shop where it was cleaned and blasted and checked. It's a virgin block(#3782870) that is dated A 18 2. It is also RE or RF--I can't see for sure. This block has never had any machine work and is standard bore, etc. It also has an uncut forged crankshaft with main studs and windage tray and the rods and pistons. I was going to rebuild it for the '57, but thought someone might be able to use it for a '62 restoration. Can send pics if interested.
