Wow.. Flames from my carb
Well after all of my other issues, it seems that now my carb wants to self destruct me.. When cold starting it cranks it's a$$ off, and then I get a couple of loud pops and flames shows.. What's wierd is once I get it started (flames be damned... ) it idles just fine.. Drives pretty good excet for a slight hesitation when I jump on it.. I have the time at 10*.. Any ideas... Oh, yea its a 65 327/350 with a holley 4150..
Thanks,

If initial timing is actually at 10º (assuming a stock distributor), I think the problem is probably elsewhere.

I am no engine specialist but I do know a few things. You stated that you have a 4150 carb on your 327ci x 350hp. My coupe is a early production 66 built in Sepetember of 1965. As a result it has an early production 427ci x 450hp engine. Could your problems be because you might have the wrong carb?

Carburetor backfires can be caused by a lean mixture.
Check the choke system for proper operation.

Also, might be good to verify that the timing mark is actually correct. Outer rings on balancers have been known to shift, and wrong timing indicators have been used (by Bubba, among others), and Chevy has changed balancer mark location as well. If everyting is "original", could still be a outer ring shift issue. Take number one plug out, and then rotate the engine by hand, and with the aid of a thin screwdriver in #1 plug hole, you can feel when the piston is at TDC. Check the indicator/balancer mark, and hopefully you can rule that out.
Fire through the carb indicates a definate timing problem, either ignition or cam, or very leaky intakes valves (hung open due to being stuck, but that is pretty rare these days). Fire / ignition in the combustion chamber has to be making it's way into the intake tract, either through faulty timing or a valve not sealed. It could also be a valve timing issue (timing chain jump a tooth), but other symptoms should be evident as well.
I do not recommend changing ignition timing, just for the sake of making a change. Find out where the fault is, and fix it.
Good luck,
Plasticman

hmmm...
I really appreciate all the comments.. I've talked to someone local who also thinks its lean.. The squiter was originally a #21 and I just put in a #25 with no change. What I really can't understand is the that once the I DO get it started it idles just fine. I was also told that the fuel filter could be bad and is letting the gas drain out of the bowls since the check vavle could be bad?? I guess it's possible that it could have jumped a tooth on the timing, but then wouldn't that show up once I do get it started as being rough at idle? Please keep the comments coming and I'll update everyone..
thanks!!
