Re: Big Block ...vs... Small Block..What Do You Think..??? (Viet Nam Vett)
I like the small blocks. Had a 327 in my Chevelle, have one in my vette.
I like the high revving characteristics of the 327 in particular. Something about an engine screaming gives me pleasure.
Small blocks can make plenty of street and strip power, you just have to wind the snot out of them.
I have a big block in a 70 C-20 and that thing is torque monster.
My Chevelle w/327 was a roller motor and revved to 8,000 revs. Tons of HP and pushed the 11's all the time.
Someone always has something faster, or with more HP. My 327 still puts a smile on my face.
With my personality and 550HP BB I would just need something bigger and better in a few years. It would never end.

Modified or stock? Small blocks are cheaper to play around with, but "Bigger is Better" in most cases. My favorite choice would actually be a 383 or 406 small block, so that I could get small block revs and HP with low cost and big block torque without the weight and size.

small block all the way. more dependable. and way more fun. and cheap to build. i have 2 big block cars that are running right now and one that will be finished this summer. one is a 390 hp 427 vette.the other a 65 big block biscayne with a LS6 454 4 speed and the last will be the L88 grand sport . i can not say what the L88 will be like but as far as the other two . I will take my 55 chevy 327 4 speed car any day. it will walk allover the vette and has run much faster at the track than the biscayne. i like the high reving feeling of a well built small block.

Big block chevy all the way !! I have a ZL-1 427 69 Camaro and I drive it every where a LS6 454 and I drive it hard, a 509 ci chevy and it goes 9:50 in the 1/4 mile in a 80 Malibu and for testing & lic passes it will go 8:50 in my TOP Sportsman 63 Vette and I'm building a blown 540 cubic inch 14-71 Littlefield alky motor and it will make 2000 hp so you ask big chevy or small chevy BIG block Chevy all the way, my dually tow vehicle also has a 454 ci, however I just sold my 63 coupe S/W and it had a 300 hp 327 4 gear a real fun car but missing some real torque maker !!

Define "better"?
Best hi performance vette?
Best crusier?
We all have a different vision of "our" ideal midyear. For me it's a coupe, with a blueprinted high RPM solid lifter BB, loud/free breathing side pipes, 4.11's /M22, F41, KO's, no power/comfort options.

I like the BB. Easy and cheaper to make lots of torque which makes it fun around town.

Mark,
I think we need to get you back to work :D
Personally I love your car the way it is, do you really want to mess with it now that it is perfect? Now if you were going to say sell the Thunderchicken and buy another car, I would say build a bigblock. I personally like them both, small block '65 and '66 and Bigblock '67's. I don't like the bigblock hood before '67, and love the hood on a '67.
And you do have some idea what it would take to convert over after your last thread last week, take some time and make a decison after you get to drive this year, I would hate to see you start the project while you are still laid up and not be able to drive untill after it was done.
And it might be more than a one day project.

Small blocks are fun but I've enjoyed my big block cars way more. Although, I might just be overcompensating... nah.

i think it depends on a lot of things. the vette is my second toy. the first toy i bought is a big block dodge. its cool to have one big block and that thing really screams, but its a handful to drive. that one is more of a garage queen. since buying the vette and scheming on what i want to do with it, im definitely gonna go small. theres just something about high rpms that do it for me, and plus i want the vette to be a good solid driver. big blocks are a little too much for me for any long distances. anything more then 30 mins behind the wheel of the dodge and im worn out. i want to be able to take the vette out for the day and not be spent when i get home a couple of hours later.

My BB is garage furniture - in a bag. The sb gives better mileage and is the ideal cheap generic engine - I'm on my 3rd one since I yanked the BB.

I won't strat this project untill next year if I do it anyway.. And I do have a good idea what's involved as far all the work and exspence to change my SB to a BB.. It's a major project which will require pulling the rear and changing the drive yokes as well as some exchaust fabbing as well as a bunch of other gack.
The other route would be a Hopped up SB..which would not require as much work but still down time and cash.
Maybe I'll just leave it alone and enjoy it the way it is ...Or I could sell the 86 and start hunting for a BB car..

Here's my answer(s):
It's called 454 and 502-

There's nothing for all Chevys like the seat-pinning torque of the Rat motor!
What a rush!!

Right up my {Nitro} alley. Another place where bigger is always better than small. The best single carb engine ever built. Almost unbeatable except for a {A990 Race Hemi} and the Chrysler has a pair of staggered Holleys in order to accomplish that. You can`t touch a properly set up Chevy with a street hemi though.  You can use a small block to start the big one.
