Super Muncie
Has anyone tried one of the new super Muncies from Gearzone? I went from 4.11 to 3.55 rear gears and now I want to change to a wide ratio 4spd. Instead of rebuilding my Muncie I see that Gearzone has a brand new Muncie for approx. $1,700. I could keep my same Hurst shifter and clutch disc. I understand Gearzone solved the weakness problems with the old Muncies. Thanks

Re: Super Muncie (Old Veter)
First Welcome to the Forum... :seeya While I am not familiar with the Super Muncie that you are referring to, I did install a Super T-10 (Borg-Warner) in my 66 coupe and it is described as "Bullet Proof" on the box. It has a significantly larger output shaft and appears to look (and it seems to operate) that way. It too is a direct bolt in with the exception of having to swap to a TH 400 yoke and the need to shorten the driveshaft by about 1 inch. I can say that I have loved it so far...

Re: Super Muncie (Old Veter)
I would like to learn some more about the weak links in the muncie.
The muncie in my vette seemed ok when I had it out a year ago.
I ran an M22 in my chevelle and had around 600 HP in front of it, never had any problems other then going through a couple of clutches.
Also this muncie replacement, is it like the original muncies, just beefed up?

Re: Super Muncie (Old Veter)
i put one in my 70 e.c. last year, and really like it....difference is in case strength,,ears, and steel midplate......only prob ive had is with leak out of vent...had to run a longer tube....dont know how well you would like it in the vette tho....gear whine in lower gears...typical M22.....but, it is damned stout!

I am sorry. I didn't mean to step on anybody's toes, I was merely looking for advice. I read an article in a Corvette magazine about an improved transmission for my Corvette. I was curious if anyone had tried one of these?

I hope my post was not offensive, I am just interested in the Muncie transmission and if there are some week links involved. Just curious.
Also what does this new Muncie have that the old ones do not?

Re: Super Muncie (Old Veter)
For the price it looks real hard to pass up. I have considered a 5 speed but I don't know if it is worth the extra $. And I just love that M22 sound!

Re: Super Muncie (Old Veter)
First we should clear up the "New Muncie from Gearzone" deal. He just sells the trans he builds from parts made by Auto Gear. They make and sell all the parts of the "New Muncie". He is a dealer for Auto Gear as I am.
There is no comparison between the old muncie and a new one other than the name. The case is stronger in all the right areas, not the least of whick is the mounting ears. It has different inside dimensions, tighter than the old case ever was. There is a cast iron mid plate to prevent the center bearing from tearing out, new extension housing and a new side cover with new thicker shift shafts.
There are no used parts in this trans. It is available in a 27 spline output and 32 spline output, wide and close ratio M22, M20 and M21. The M22W fine spline only on the input.
There is a road race version, M22X, very tight spread.
A roller bearing first gerar is available for the M22 and M22W.
There is a 5 speed OD trans in the pipeline, next year is the best info on that, trans will be a shift rail style unit, fit in place os the muncie and be sold with the shifter for around $2400.
Complete M22, M22W are $1800 and come with a one year waranty from me. M20 and M21 units are slightly less. Shipping extra.

what are the ratios for the 22W? 2.52,1.88, 1.46, like the 66 M20?
the 22W has the strong/steep angle (loud) gears, right?
any idea what the Muncie OD trans ratios will be?
thanks

Re: Super Muncie (66427-450)
M22W is the early 2.54 ratio like the 64/65. The gear angle is the same as the M22, around 22 degrees. These gear sets are made in Italy, not China or Tiawan like some that are floating around.
The OD trans will be based on the M22 and 5th gear is around a .78. I think the last time I talked to George at Auto Gear, he mention running a 4.10 gear and when you put her in 5 it will be like a 3.08.
The trans will have a new case, new shifting system, new extension housing, lots of new gears, most will be roller bearings like the first gear now offered.
Part of the delay is the shift system and the new shifter. Can't sell a trans that no one has a shifter for.
There is no 5 speed od trans that fits these cars without hacking them up.
The richmond 5 is not OD, only the 6 and it's a nightmare.

Are you the same Wally Knight that had the '93 C4 that was using a Electromotive Opti-Eliminator several years back?

Yep, same one. 93 is gone, parked it in a guard rail and did 9K damage to the thing, fixed it and sent her packing.
Still have the opti spark deal, what a deal that turned out to be, took it off before I crashed the car.
