Master Cylinder rebuild kit: Seeking Advice
What is the correct kit or Part number to rebuild the master cylinder in my 65? It has the standard non power disc brakes. The master cylinder has part number 2225032 on the underside. The piston?? with the rebuild kit is a smaller diameter than the bore of the M/C and the other parts in the kit don't match the current parts.
Auto Value ordered me a Wagner p/n F46355 7/8".
NAPA lists a kit p/n 393.
Advance lists a p/n 202847.
Auto Zone something else.
The Chevy dealer lists Bendix 3871543 and 617219.
Anyone help? What kit is right? I have to prepay and wait a couple days to find out it's not right. Just a little frustrated at this point.
If the correct rebuild kit is not available, does the service replacement master cylinder look correct? Nobody at the parts houses knows.

Re: Master Cylinder rebuild kit: Seeking Advice (Jeff Garner)
Maybe this will yield some clues:
My '76 parts manual says the master cylinder is Bendix 618690 w/ 1" bore, and it takes a 617219 kit.
The power brake master also has a 1" bore.
The drum brake master cylinder has a 7/8" bore.
Why not order a kit from a Corvette vendor, like Long Island Corvette: #19B

Re: Master Cylinder rebuild kit: Seeking Advice (Kid_Again)
I just did my 66 a couple of days ago- 1" bore (manual brakes). Got my kit from advanced auto parts for $16 (bendix brand), which is half the price of the corvette vendors. Very simple to do. I was able to look up the kit for myself at:

That is a link to a rebuild article, but if you hit "home", you can search for your kit #...
Good luck,
Matt

Thanks Matt, That was a helpful and informative link. I called today and ordered the Bendix kit # 22847. Hopefully, it will be the correct kit this time.

You can't take a ride because you're in the rum, or cause your engine's out? Well, I've got 2 on jack stands now waiting to have the brakes worked if I can get the right stuff. I think I'll ride around town tomorrow returning all the wrong kits I've collected in the past week.
How about measuring the O.D. of the plunger (the long silver cylinder thing) for me. 7/8" or 1"?
Thanks, Buddy!

Jeff- I suck!! I already have my master bolted back up, but I had it fresh in my mind that it was a 1" bore, I could read a "1" on the plunger piston. I must have been wrong if you got the same one, and it was 7/8"
Sorry :nonod:

Birdball, I'm not blaming you at all.
I ordered what the Advance site listed as correct. 22847. It measures 7/8" diameter and the little black plunger piece even has 7/8" stamped on it. I just keep getting the wrong kit for some reason.
Maybe youwish2bme's kit is 1". Thanks, Jeff

I got a kit at the local NAPA store and it worked fine the first time. Still working, for that matter. :auto:

Re: Master Cylinder rebuild kit: Seeking Advice (Jeff Garner)
Jeff:
As posted there were three different master cylinders in '65. All three require different kits. I don't remember the dimension across the reservoir for the disc brakes but it is about 2 1/2 to 3 inches and has two flat spring clips hanging from the lid that snap under the resevoir. These cylinders are 1" bore. The drum brakes look like the '64 cylinder and have a bail that swings over the top of the cap. These are 7/8".
Wagner still makes a new cylinder, about $80 list price. I don't think it will judge as original but to the casual observer, you'd never know the difference.
It is exasperating to find a kit for these cylinders. Most parts people will give you that "deer in the headlights" look when you tell them what you need.
If you have no luck finding a kit, e-mail me. I gave $20 for mine. Too much but I ran out of patience. I can get you one just like it.

Re: Master Cylinder rebuild kit: Seeking Advice (MikeM)
Mike, Sounds like you've run the same rabbit. There was a lot of confusion with the 65 due to drum brakes still being available, so I gave them the part number off the M/C and it's the same as a 66 M/C. The Bendix kit 22847 is listed for the 66 M/C kit also, so the parts houses are clueless. I know I could just buy a new M/C, but I really wanted to rebuild the original. Thanks for the info. Jeff

Paragon has the kit for the '65 manual M/C - 1" bore, their #6650K, $30.00 - includes piston, seals, spring, boot, etc. Doc Rebuild and LICS have it too.
