Default 40083 Fuel Pump

Does this look like a correct 40083 fuel pump for a 65 365hp car? The top and bottom look like very rough pot metal while the body looks like shiny metal. Were there date codes on these things or just date tags that were attached to them? If I have it rebuilt by someone, can they make the metal look good again?

That is an assembly line pump.

Appreciate your response. So does that mean it's not correct and I should look for a different pump to rebuild? I guess I don't know what "an assembly line pump" means?

An assembly line pump is what was used from new. The later service pumps differ then that. 100% rebuild that pump.

That's great to hear as when I bought it many years ago, I thought I was buying the correct one. Now...who should I have rebuild it and can they make it look good again?

Yours is a second design 40083. First designs have a cast bottom. Yours is original and well worth rebuilding. I’ve had Arthur Gould rebuild many for me but my last one was expensive. What was $110 a couple of years ago is over $170 now. Yours will be more as they will have to replete the stamped steel bottom. I also had a #4657 that was done a few months ago fail. Hopefully they will stand behind it.

Thanks for the reply Dave. I called A Gould and they don't replate anything. If I want it to look "original and correct", should that bottom stamped steel plate be gold cadmium plated? Is anything else plated like the screws? Or are all other parts just bead blasted to look like bare metal?

Also, does anyone make the little tags that have the date codes on them? I assume those just attach to one of the screws that hold the body together?

I believe the stamped steel bottoms were gold cad plated. Arthur Gould can provide the correct screws with the “S” on the head. Looks like you will have to find a plating source on your own. The tag on a 40083 pump would indicate a service replacement. You don’t want a tag on yours.

I took off my bottom plate and the screws and they all were definately plated at one time...and likely a light gold cad. I am hoping my buddy locally will let me use his plating setup to get it done as none of the rebuilders will do it.

The good news is all my screws have the "s" on them, so I don't need to buy new screws.

I think I might send my pump off to Terrill Machine in Denton TX. Freb Ballard recommended them since Fred only rebuilds the crimped fuel pumps. Anyone else ever use them?

If you want one that is nice and pretty, new, never used 40083 service replacement, I'd be happy to trade you straight across.
