[C1] Fiberglass Repair Novice

Default Fiberglass Repair Novice

I have been studying and watching videos on how to do fiberglass repairs to C1 Corvettes. One thing that keeps coming up that I am not 100% sure about is when they say to V cut out the crack. Is there a special type of die grinder bit called a "V bit" or something.

Help me out as I am a little confused with this part.

No special bit. V shape to the crack. Some drill a hole at the end of a crack. ———-0

It should keep it from spreading. Others more knowledgeable can chime in.

My brother in law was the head fabricator for Newman Haas and today we were talking about fiberglass. The resin and hardener are intimidating until you realize they are not as precise as the instructions suggest. I learned that you make small amounts and add plenty of hardener. The last thing you want is it not to set. It is very forgiving and you can always start over by grinding it back out.

4" angle grinder with #36 grit disc, simply grind out about 2" on each side of the crack at an angle, so the fiberglass is almost razor thin at the crack, to full thickness about 2" out each side from the crack.

The section on body repair in the ST-12 manual has good pics on this.

Nothing wrong with a Dremel Tool with a precise cutting blade.... See the attached picture of relieving stress on cracks around a lower corner of a C2 rear Coupe glass......I'm not sure of the severity of your cracks.......

Don’t try and measure drops of hardener to resin. Get a cheap kitchen scale and weigh the material for an exact ratio. A good scale is less than $20 on Amazon.


The plastic prevents drips on the scale. Set your empty container on it and zero the scale. Now you can easily get the resin/hardener ratio correct.
