Flaming River steering column
anybody with a tilt steering column from Flaming River ?
I have one in my '67 as i bought my car , and it seems there is a stiff spot on 1/4 turn left or right. ( if i dial it straight ahead on the "soft" spot )
???

Long story , short answer . I demounted the complete steering column , ( not difficult after seeing a video of that spring and how to remove the pivot points ) to find that the "plastic" bushing
has no radial strenght at all. By clamping the column tube ( stainless thin wall ) at the firewall bracket it deforms the bushing enough to have stiff spots in the steering !
I made one in bronze and all problems gone.... perfect steering now with the R&P.

not relevant , if i disconnect everything down there , there is that stiff spot in the column.

Installed on years ago, worked very well, no issues.

thanks so far for replys .... perhaps someone will chime in with similar problem. I assume it's the U joint in there that causes those stiff spots.
Don't think one can grease it ??
I demounted the column as far as i "could" .... then the pivot points are some sort of rods with a internal thread to remove either by pulling a bolt or just screwing it in more ?? I didn't daire to go further, as it 's also under spring tension for the tilt function.
I didn't even have a bolt for that thread. ( I'm in Belgium , Europe.... )

BelgiumBarry,
I have a Flaming River 67 tilt column in my coupe. No problems. However there obviously is a u-joint somewhere under the sheet metal. I am not sure how you would go about getting at that. I know you are "time zones" away, but I would e-mail them to see if you can get a diagram of how its put together (you've probably already thought of that)...info@flamingriver.com
